Objectives of the Study


To gain an insight into the relationship between

performance appraisal and job satisfaction. To study the impact of performance appraisal on job satisfaction. To find the perception of employees regarding accountability of appraisal system. To compare the extent of job satisfaction in public and private sector teachers. to identify the factors influencing job satisfaction in public and private schools.

Review of Literature
Here are some studies conducted from 2008 to 2013 regarding

performance and job satisfaction: o Performance appraisal and employee job satisfaction outcomes: mediating and moderating roles of work motivation The purpose of this study was to explore alternative relationships between performance appraisal and employee job satisfaction outcomes in the form of self-reported work performance, affective organizational commitment and turnover intention. o Influence of appraisal systems that head teachers use on performance of secondary school teachers in Borabu District in Kenya This study was out to establish the influence of appraisal systems that head teachers use on performance, of secondary school teachers. The researcher hoped that the findings of this study would enable secondary school teachers to comprehend and appreciate the essential areas assessed by the performance appraisal system as this could make an integral part in improving the productivity of their work in the schools where they taught.

Effects of performance appraisal on job satisfaction at Kenya

Sampling method: simple random sampling Sample size: 100 Public schools:50 Private schools: 50 Source of data collection: primary Schools covered: Gian Jyoti Senior secondary school, Phase 2, Mohali Saint Soldier International School, Sector-28, Chandigarh Gem Senior Secondary School, Phase 3B-1 , Mohali Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector-37,

Chandigarh Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector-16, Chandigarh Government Model School, Phase 7, Mohali

Data Analysis
Statistical tools used: SPSS and Microsoft excel

From the analysis, it was observed that:


Satisfaction level of employees with their

supervisor was directly related to the opportunities available for promotion If performance expected by the supervisor was high, the satisfaction level of employees was low

Because of bickering in the jobs, satisfaction level

was found to be low If the employees are satisfied with their pay, this shows a higher understanding of the current pms rating Understanding the current pms objectives indicates higher satisfaction with supervisor Any attempts to increase the understanding of current pms has no relationship with the training requirements

relation was observed between Performance Appraisal and Job Satisfaction. Employees of the Public sector were much more satisfied than the Private one with there Performance Appraisal system.

Recommendations
Standardized performance appraisal should be

there for private sector teachers, conducting on regular basis. Sufficient rewards should be given to private sector teachers, for motivation. Proper recognitions should be give to private sector teachers for the work done.

Here are some other recommendations given by private

school teachers themselves: It should be based on the performance of an individual. Gagandeep Sandhu It should be strictly according to performance. Nancy Sharma It should be according to the efforts, eligibility and sincerity. Sukhdeep Kaur Paying insufficient money at work places discourages the excellent performers even. So the foremost classification or categorization of someone should be directly proportional to his worth, and to calculate worth of a worker, there was never a dearth of ideas at work places.

limitations
Some of the employees could have given biased

or subjective answers. The employee selection for the sample was random. This may have excluded some better sample options from the population. Some employees were not able to give proper detailed answers because of time constraint. Some employees considered filling up of questionnaire a mere formality.

Conclusion
Perception Of Public sector employees regarding Appraisal System is positive according to the survey conducted, hence we can say that Performance Appraisal a contributing factor for determining the Job Satisfaction.
