WIRELESS CONTROL THAT SIMPLY WORKS

6th August 2009

What Is ZigBee Technology?

 IEEE IEEE 802 IEEE 802.15 IEEE 802.15.4 Zigbee Technology

 ZigBee is an established set of specifications for wireless personal area networking

(WPAN) . For low data rate, low power, low cost wireless systems operating in unlicensed
RF domain

Zigbee Features

• Typical range 1-100m.

• ISM (Industrial, Scientific & Medical) radio bands :-

- 2.4 GHz Global Band at 250kbps (16 Channels)
- 868 MHz European Band at 20kbps (1 Channel)
- 915 MHz North American Band at 40kbps (10 Channels)

• Low power consumption ( Battery life from multi-months to years).

• Bi-directional.

• Support for low latency devices (few ms maximum)

• CSMA-CA channel access.

• Capable of connecting 65,536 devices per network

Zigbee Origin

• The IEEE 802.15.4 standard was completed in May 2003.

• The ZigBee specifications were ratified on 14 December 2004.

• The ZigBee Alliance announced public availability of Specification 1.0 on 13 June
2005.
• Much research is still going on with ZigBee.
