ETABS
by
Hitesh Lahoti

CSI-India, Pune
What ETABS Can DO ?
ETABS gives very wide analysis options. You can do
Multi Storey buildings
Parking Garages
Staggered Trusses
Flat Slab, flat plate, waffle floor buildings
Buildings with/without shear walls
Steel, concrete, composite framing
Sequential load analysis
Pushover analysis
Damper, base isolator analysis
Rigid, Semi-Rigid diaphragms, Computation of Centre of Rigidity
And much more P-Delta, Non-Linear time history etc. etc.
ETABS Terminology!!
ETABS has a very simple terminology.
Objects represent a physical structural member.
Point objects represent a location in space connected to
other points by line/area objects.
Point objects may be connected to ground also
Line objects are used to model columns, beams, braces
etc.
Area objects are used to model floor, ramps, walls etc.

ETABS Language!
Story Level
ETABS works on story level.
It is very logical and convenient for buildings.
Labeling of Objects is Automatic
ETABS keeps a very good and very easy to understand scheme
of labels.
Units
Force, length, temperature and time are the basic units.
You can have any system of units, Input and Output may be in
any system of units.
ETABS Coordinate System
In ETABS there is only one Global Coordinate
System.
This is right handed Cartesian 3-D coordinate system
+Z Direction is always upwards. Gravity acts in Z direction!
But you are free to define alternate coordinate system as aid
to develop your model

ETABS Loadings
Static Loads represent actions upon the structure
These may be force, pressure, support displacement, thermal
effects etc. Define as many cases as you need to describe a
spatial distribution of loads.
Vertical Loads
Dead Loads
Live Loads
Reduced Live Loads
Snow Loads etc.
Lateral Loads
Due to Wind
Due to Earthquake

Design Settings
ETABS offers integrated design
postprocessors for
Steel Frame Design
Concrete Frame Design
Composite Beam Design
Joist Design
Shear Wall Design.

Rigid, Semi Rigid Diaphragm
ETABS offers three choices for modeling
of floor diaphragms
Rigid diaphragm
Semi rigid (flexible) diaphragm
No diaphragm

Special effects
only ETABS Handles This
Design of various shapes of Columns such
as T-col, L-Col, Poly shaped column
Design of Beams with varying depths
Shear walls with and without openings
according to Indian Code
Wind load considering Windward and
Leeward directions.

Mismatch Mesh in 3-D
WALL & RAMP OBJECTS
INTERNAL MESHING
Shear Wall Floor Connectivity
Shear Wall With and Without
Openings

WALL OBJECTS
INTERNAL MESHING
Columns with different shapes
Beams with varying section

ETABS Advanced Analysis Options
ETABS offers other advanced options like
Damper analysis
Modeling of Base Isolators
Time History Analysis
Non-Linear static Pushover analysis
Optimization for Drift

With these unmatched features ETABS is most
preferred software for building design around the
Globe!
