*FAQs on IES:

1)What is IES?

Indian Engineering Services (IES/ES) constitute of engineers that


work under the government of India to manage a large segment of public sector economy which constitutes of Railroads, Public works, Power, Telecommunications, etc.

A combined competitive examination is conducted by the Union


Public Services Commission (UPSC) for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services.

2)Eligibility for IES Exam?


Age Limit: Minimum 21 years and maximum 30 years Age Relaxation: upper age limit of 30 years is relaxable upto 35 years in the case of Government Servants of certain categories. Education Qualification: For admission to the examination, a candidate must have any one of the following:

Obtained a degree in Engineering from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or


State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956;

Passed Section A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India); Obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from such foreign University/College/Institution
and under such conditions as may be recognized by the Government for the purpose from time to time,

Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institute of Electronics and


Telecommunication Engineers (India);

Passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the


Aeronautical Society of India;

Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and


Radio Engineers, London held after November, 1959.

Candidate for the post of Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering
Posts and Engineer Group 'A' in Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing/Monitoring Organization) may possess any of the above qualifications or the qualification mentioned below namely:

M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio


Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject.

3)What is IES Exam process?

The Examination constitutes of a written examination followed by an interview


for personality test.

Part I The written examination will comprise two sectionsSection I


consisting only of objective types of questions and Section II of conventional papers

Part II Personality test carrying a maximum of 200 marks of such of the


candidates who qualify on the basis of the written examination.

4)Duration for IES Coaching?


It nearly takes 2-3 months for IES Coaching.

5)How to prepare for IES?

Good writing skills, good presentation, subjective theory, explanations, derivations,


diagrams and equations will fetch you good marks in conventional or subjective paper. Be aware of exam pattern like how many technical & non-technical questions are asked, negative marks weight-age, exam duration and marks per question. Always make a habit of referring previous year question papers. Adopt Reference books for derivations, equations, conceptual thinking, theory etc. Short Cut Techniques: Traditional methods to solve numerical problems is time taking process, try to adopt short cut techniques to save the time. Reading news paper, good grip on English language and current affairs will help in scoring more marks in General Ability paper carrying 200 marks. Never neglect General Ability part as this section is scoring and also plays an important role in personal interview.

Practice previous year question papers. Deep knowledge of the subject, strong basics, clear concepts helps in
better understanding of the subjects and proved to be instrumental in getting good scores. Personal Interview : Sound technical knowledge, Positive attitude, body language, Good communication skills, Hobbies General Awareness Knowledge plays an important role to clear personal interviews.
