Introduction
Whilst lacking in key natural resources, Afghanistan is a key transit route in the Middle East Strategically important to both British occupied India and to the Russians The battle for control of Afghanistan is often called the Great Game

Anglo-Afghan War I
1839-1842 More commonly referred to as Aucklands Folly or an Unmitigated Disaster Featuring the following key players

The Beginning
Territorial disagreements between Auckland and Dost Herat besieged by Persian (Iranian) army backed by Russians Auckland decides to pre-emptively strike to protect India from invasion Overall plan to replace Dost by Shah Shuja using force

The Middle
20,000 troops enter via Bolan & Kojak passes Kandahar taken with ease Garrisons at Qalat and Ghanzi defended by troops commanded by Khan Khans troops destroyed Dost flees to the Hindu Kush and then captured Shah Shujah installed as leader but is unpopular

Middle - 2
Insurgency increases British decide to leave and agree to withdraw Too hasty and leave with no Afghan provided FP Smashed in the mountains on the way to Jalabad by Ghanzi hill tribe warriors Chuck Norris is the only one to make it After the fall of Kabul, Khan lays siege to Jalabad

The End
Shuja lasts in power until killed in 1842 British retaliate and push to Kabul to rescue hostages and burn the Bazaar All that was achieved was 20-25K dead and a ruined market Dost is freed and returns as leader of Afghanistan

The Beginning
Dost rules until he dies in 1863 Succeeded by his son, Sher Ali. Negotiations break down with the British Ali allows a Russian political contingent into Kabul but refuses the British British delegation enters via Kyber pass but is refused entry So Lytton sends troops

The Middle
Troops aim to dominate Indian-Afghan Border Kandahar & Kyber and Kurram passes taken Sher Ali flees Kabul but dies of heart attack Succeeded by Yakub Khan Khan agrees to British demands in return for support Treaty of Gandamak signed

Middle - 2
Afghan Army soldiers mutiny and demand payback from British British refuse British envoy residence in Kabul destroyed including 200 residents killed. Roberts appointed as commander and sent to search & destroy those responsible Roberts re-occupies Kabul after immense fighting

The End
British replace Khan with his cousin Rahman Khans brother is upset and lays siege to Kandahar Roberts is a hero again and re-takes Kandahar Rahmans reign is secure and stable

The Beginning
Rahman rules until he dies in 1902 Succeeded by Amanullah Khan Amanullah breaks the treaty of Gandamak in 1919 Declares a Jihad on the British Tries to re-take British held border areas, assuming the British would be war-weary after WW1

The Middle
Afghan forces take the British by surprise Due to WW1 many British regulars are unavailable so the TA are used Air power is now used as a force multiplier Battles soon reach stalemate Unable to take the continued aerial attack, Amanullah agrees to come to the negotiating table

The End
1000 Afghan deaths, 2000 British and Colonial deaths Treaty of Rawalpindi signed Durand line re-affirmed as the political boundary
