Who We Polled
Survey fielded online November 6 - December 2, 2013 Survey was shared via email lists of RespectAbility and numerous other organizations in the disability community and on social media 3839 Respondents of which 1969 are people with disabilities. Unweighted data. *Note- This sample includes the activist PwD community and reflects more women, Democrats, Caucasians,
and a more highly educated audience than one might expect within the disability community. Phone survey options and assistance were made available to respondents although due to the nature of the online survey instrument the sample likely underreports people with cognitive and intellectual disabilities among others.

Survey Fielded November 6 December 2, 2013 3839 Respondents, 1969 People with Disabilities

Key Findings for Discussion

Disability community sites employer perceptions that someone with a disability will not be as successful as someone without a disability and health as primary barriers to jobs 3 out of 4 people with disabilities surveyed value a job and independence over government benefits, no partisan split on this

Disability community names top ways to impact work environment as change in employer attitudes, employer training, and change in structure of benefits system
Younger PwDs More Confident Less than half of PwDs looking for work have access to quality training programs, career counseling, and professional resources (e.g., job coach) needed to help with a job search.
Survey Fielded November 6 December 2, 2013 3839 Respondents, 1969 People with Disabilities 6

Key Findings for Discussion

Perceptions are key in a number of ways: Only 28% think society expects PwDs to work, Key barriers to work are employer perceptions of PwDs and the legal environment. Of the 1969 people who responded that they have a disability, 1 out of 5 do not consider themselves disabled.
Complicated work/benefit relationship is evident. Despite differences, a majority of F/F/P/V and nearly 3 out of 4 PwDs say it is more important to have a job and be independent than a safety net of benefits. However, potential loss of benefits is a major barrier to entering the workforce for F/F/P/V.

Survey Fielded November 6 December 2, 2013 3839 Respondents, 1969 People with Disabilities

Key Findings for Discussion (cont.)

Having a job is very important to happiness and a sense of accomplishment and the kind of work are the most important factors in a job Reality check that there are real issues preventing some people from working that are difficult for employers to navigate There are real differences between how PwDs see themselves and how family, friends, professionals and volunteers view them and their abilities. Two-thirds of PwDs think their disability is a challenge that makes them more capable vs. more than half of F/F/P/V who think it is a barrier.
Survey Fielded November 6 December 2, 2013 3839 Respondents, 1969 People with Disabilities 8

Key Findings for Discussion (cont.)

Overwhelming majority feel paying under the minimum wage is never appropriate, small minority think it is. Widespread lack of trust in government and schools to do the right thing to increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
Large majorities more likely to vote for a candidate for public office if they have a written policy statement on their website on specifically what they will do to improve opportunities for people with disabilities or if they have a strong record on improving opportunities for people with disabilities. With unweighted sample, plurality of PwDs and F/F/P/V (51%) consider themselves Democrats, 26% Independent, 16% Republican, 8% DK.

Survey Fielded November 6 December 2, 2013 3839 Respondents, 1969 People with Disabilities

Key Findings for Discussion (cont.)

Young people with disabilities are distinctly different than earlier generations. This is the post ADA and IDEA generation.
They got to go to public schools in a least restricted environment and they can get around with curb cuts etc. They are WAY braver than older PwDs more interested in being involved in advocacy, more opposed to sheltered workshops and/or sub minimum wage. They were largely born as a PwD, are still living at home with their parents, and are less comfy with idea of affirmative action, though they think something must be done to enable employment.

Greatest Barrier

I never been offered work stuck in workshop Finding a job that is a good match for my health needs Lack of experience I never really knew why business's wouldn't hire me, so I started my business. Scared that I will be overwhelmed in the type of job I want Need somewhat flexible schedule due to disability Stressors trigger symptoms and I need breaks. employers don't want to spend money to provide for captioning services (CART) I am discouraged by employer attitudes of PwD Being fast. There is a overwhelming demand by most employers to be super fast and multi-task. A lot of us are just not wired that way and the end result is an overwhelming sense of failure.

Messaging on Employment for PwDs Differs Based on Party Affiliation Although Top Message Works for AllBegs Additional Research of Employers

Our nation was founded on the principles of "All Men Are Created Equal. Fifty years after Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his "I Have a Dream speech, we still need to reach our civil rights goal. People with disabilities deserve to be able to work to achieve the American dream just like anyone else.
We cannot afford to have more than 10 million Americans sit at home collecting benefits when they can help make America stronger. Keeping a disability unemployment compensation system that costs taxpayers $350 billion a year is financially unsustainable. Every American who can work should be encouraged and supported to do so. Companies like Walgreens, Bank of America and others have shown that employees with disabilities add to their company's profitability. They are very qualified and help them make more money. If we find the right jobs for the right people it can and does increase the bottom line of companies. Companies that have diverse employees, including people with disabilities, are more likely to get government contracts. Newregulations mean that companies who hire people with disabilities will be favored in government contracts. This will help them make more money.
