Social representation

Sophie Morris

Our opening represents social groups in three main ways, these are: Gender, Ethnicity and age.

Gender social groups

Male
Our opening sequence appeals to makes because our main character is a female. This could create a connection and this therefore relates to Laura Mulveys Male gaze theory as the men could feel an attraction towards the woman character. Also the film is going to be actionpacked. This stereotypically will attract a male audience because they are more likely to consume a media product that is thrilling rather than romantic.

Female
They will be interested in our movie because throughout our opening sequence we see the features that are usually associated with a woman e.g. shoes, makeup, jewellery. This creates a personal relationship(Blumler and Katz) between the female audience and the main character as they have a connection. Also, at the beginning of the film opening they may be envious of the woman therefore creates a diversion (Blumler and Katz) for the audience.

We have represented the woman as a strong independent character until the cracks start to show. This is the same as Black Swan. In the film Natalie Portman suffers with Anxiety. This appears to be the same thing in our opening because throughout the start of our opening our lead character appears to be normal but as it goes on the character shows cracks in her mental stability.

Examples

Age Social groups

Younger people They are more active and the opening to our film connotes that the film will be action packed so therefore will attract more of a younger audience as they are more thrill-seeking and adventurous. Also in the opening the character is a young doctor. This is around the same age range of our target audience so therefore they can identify things within themselves.(Personal Identity Blumler and Katz)

Older Older people will be interested in our film opening if they are thriller film buffs or if the film has something that relates to their life or gives them a nostalgic feeling. (Blumler and Kats Personal Relationships)

Ethnicity and Class

Ethnicity & Class
White British citizen Doctor- Middle class Wealthy These subvert from the general stereotype because doctors are usually represented as being male. Our Film opening also connotes that the lead character is a female. This subverts from normal stereotypes as the main character in a thriller is usually male as well. We did this because we want the female to look strong and independent. She isn't the Damsel archetype as thought by Propps Character theory.
