COMMUNICATION

The most important thing

in communication is hearing what isnt said.

PETER F. DRUCKER (1909-2005)

Behind the need to

communicate is the need to share. Behind the need to share is the need to be understood.

LEO ROSTEN (1908-1997)

I'm a great believer that any tool

that enhances communication has profound effects in terms of how people can learn from each other, and how they can achieve the kind of freedoms that they're interested in.

BILL GATES

NATURE OF COMMUNICATION
It is dynamic: this is because it is not static. also it is ongoing.
It is behavioral interaction. It is receiver's phenomenon. It elicits responses. It is complex.

It is a two-way process.
It may be of formal or informal type.

It may be personal or impersonal.

It may have three directions. I. Upward II. Downward III. Lateral It is contextual. It is all pervasive.

The ability to express an idea is as important as the idea itself

"Talkers have always ruled. They will continue to rule. The smart thing is to join them." Bruce Barton (Author)

IGNORE THIS SLIDE!!

We all know that when someone gives a message or idea, it is essential for the sender to understand the scope of that and for the recipient to understand the purpose of the communication. Now if these understanding do not exist, then there is little chance of the communication being effective. And one more thing, although the recipient who must understand the purpose, it is the responsibility of the communicator to ensure that the purpose is clearly identified.

Having being said that, scope, in this context, refers effectively to the sphere of operation or influence of the communication. There are two aspects to this: audience scope and subject scope. When we deal with audience scope first and foremost, it is essential for the communicator to clearly identify the target audience of the communication. This will allow the recipient to decide is this communication intended for me? A communication should be aimed at the general public rather than a specific group. Let us say a group of people, or more likely, at job functions or users of particular products etc. in each case, the communicator must ensure that the target audience is clearly identified. The subject scope is a specification of the information that is covered by the communication. The communication should contain information that the readers or recipient needed to know or that they may be looking for. So what is important is that the communication should always clearly identify the subject scope of the communication. So to tell, the whole point in specifying the scope is to allow the reader to decide whether the communication is relevant to them- forcing them to read half the document before telling them, rather negates this point.
