A PAPER PRESENTATION ON SMART METERS

INTRODUCTION:
o In the present scenario since demand is greater than that of
the generation we need an new technology to intimate an information about power consumption of particular customer the balance between power generation and power demand

o For this reason only smart meters are introduced to maintain o o

smart meters are two way communicating devices This technology has came into exist in order to motivate the customer so that the customer may aware of the power consumption

Demand Side Management:

Energy demand management, also known as demand side management (DSM), is the modification of consumer demand for energy through various methods. Usually, the goal of demand side management is to encourage the consumer to use less energy during peak hours or to move the time of energy use to off-peak times such as night time and weekends. If consumers could be charged less for using electricity during off-peak hours, and more during peak hours, then supply and demand would theoretically encourage the consumer to use less electricity during peak hours, thus achieving the main goal of demand side management.

Consumer Expectations

NEED OF A ADVANCED METER ?

Traditional meter reading for electricity consumption and billing is done by human operator from houses to houses and building to building. This requires huge number of labour operators and long working hour to achieve complete area reading and billing. Human operator billing are prone to reading errors as sometime in houses the electricity power meter is placed in location where it is not easily accessible . Labour billing job is sometime also restricted and is slowed down by bad weather conditions

WHAT IS SMART METER?

o It is a device helps in send energy consumption data from buildings, factories and houses to the utilities for load curve, power quality analysis and consumers billing purposes

Techs used for data transmission

AMI communication technologies can be divided into two approaches namely wired communication such as power line carrier (PLC) and wireless communication such as radio frequency (RF), Zigbee, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, WiMAX, General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) etc.

BENEFITS
- Real-time energy information, - Changes in tariffs, - Remote connection and disconnection of supply, - Changes in payment, - Remote meter reading.

OVER WORLD

Nowadays, many countries especially developed countries have implemented AMI technology in their power system. Enel SpA in Italy, BC Hydro in Canada, Oxxio Company from Netherlands and many utility companies in Europe, Australia, Japan and Korea have invested millions of dollars to install AMI devices in residential areas

CONCLUSION

In this paper, we have proposed a prepaid energy meter which takes advantage of the GSM network that has virtually access to every household and area across different countries. The GSM communication not only implements the idea of prepaid consumption of electricity but also facilitates the utilities to control energy theft using our smart energy meter. In this system, the information of electricity theft is directly reported to the central authority. Therefore, utilities can take immediate legal action against the accused consumer and hence control electricity theft to a great extent. The proposed meter is thus highly useful for power utilities for reducing electricity pilfering and ensuring revenue collection.
