Problems with measuring enthalpy
changes directly
There may be:
1. a high activation energy
2. a slow reaction rate
3. more than one reaction taking place

Hess Law
Hess law states that, if a reaction can take place by
more than one route and the initial and final
conditions are the same, the total enthalpy change is
