individuals achieve their desired family
size within the context of responsible

in DOH retained hospitals, LGU managed
health facilities, NGOs, and private sector

Types of Family Planning:
1. Natural Family Planning
Natural family planning is based on
avoiding sexual intercourse during the
fertile period of women.
2. Artificial Family Planning
Artificial family planning signifies
various contraception methods

Definition Of Terms:

Safer Sex
Safer sex refers to a sexual practice
undertaken with proper precautions to
avoid the possible chances of unwanted
pregnancy and sexually transmitted
infections and diseases (STIs and
STDs).

Abstinence
Avoiding the indulgence in any kind of
sex act.
This means not having sex (vaginal,
anal, or oral) at any time.

Outercourse
Sex play without vaginal intercourse.

Withdrawal
Pulling the penis out of vagina just at
the time of ejaculation

The Family Planning Method

Barrier Methods:
Put up a block, or barrier, to
keep sperm from reaching the egg

1. Contraceptive sponge
This barrier method is a soft,
disk-shaped device with a loop for
taking it out.
It is made out of polyurethane
foam and contains the spermicide
nonoxynol-9. Spermicide kills
sperm.

Contraceptive sponge
2. Diaphragm, Cervical Cap, and Cervical
Shield
These barrier methods block the sperm
from entering the cervix (the opening
to your womb) and reaching the egg.

Diaphragm

Diaphragm
The diaphragm is a
shallow latex cup.

Cervical Cap

Cervical Cap
The cervical cap is
a thimble-shaped
latex cup.

Cervical Shield

Cervical Shield
The cervical shield is
a silicone cup that
has a one-way valve
that creates suction
and helps It fit
against the cervix.

Female condom

3. Female condom
It is made of thin,
flexible, manmade
rubber and is
packaged with a
lubricant
This condom is worn
by the woman inside
her vagina.

Male condom
4. Male condom
Male condoms are a
thin sheath placed
over an erect penis
to keep sperm from
entering a woman's
body.
Condoms can be
made of latex,
polyurethane, or
"natural/lambskin".

Condoms are either:
Lubricated
-are ideal for vaginal sex
-are fine for oral sex,
although they may not
be ideal
-are fine for anal sex, as
long as they don't
contain nonoxynol-9

Non-lubricated
These Dry Condoms
are often used for
Oral Sex, by those
allergic to lubricant
and also as
microphone
protectors in
theater and movie
making.

Permanent Method:
1. Female Sterilization
also known as
bilateral tubal
ligation
surgical sterilization
closes the fallopian
tubes by being cut,
tied, or sealed

2. Male
Sterilization
also known as
vasectomy
the vas deferens
(passage of
sperm) is tied
and cut or
blocked

3. Sterilization Implant (essure)
Essure is the first non-surgical method
of sterilizing women.
A thin tube is used to thread a tiny
spring-like device through the vagina
and uterus into each fallopian tube.
The device works by causing scar tissue
to form around the coil.

Hormonal Methods:
Prevent pregnancy by
interfering with ovulation,
fertilization, and/or
implantation of the fertilized
egg

1. Oral contraceptives
combined pill
("The pill")
The pill contains the
hormones estrogen
and progestin.

CONTRAINDICATIONS: (PILLS)
Are older than 35 and smoke
Have a history of blood clots
Have a history of breast, liver, or
endometrial cancer
Antibiotics may reduce how well the pill
works in some women. Talk to your doctor
about a backup method of birth control if
you need to take antibiotics.
2. The patch
this skin patch is
worn on the lower
abdomen, buttocks,
outer arm, or upper
body.

3. Shot/injection
With this method
you get injections,
or shots, of the
hormone progestin
in the buttocks or
arm every 3
months.
A new type is
injected under the
skin.

4. Vaginal ring
This is a thin,
flexible ring that
releases the
hormones progestin
and estrogen.

Implantable Devices:
- Devices that are
inserted into the body
and left in place for a
few years.

1. Implantable Rod
This is a matchstick-
size, flexible rod that is
put under the skin of
the upper arm..

2. Intrauterine devices
or IUDs
An IUD is a small
device shaped like a
"T" that goes in
your uterus.

Two Types:
A. Copper IUD
It releases a small
amount of copper
into the uterus,
which prevents the
sperm from reaching
and fertilizing the
egg.

B. Hormonal IUD
It is sometimes called
an intrauterine system,
or IUS.
It releases progestin
into the uterus, which
keeps the ovaries from
releasing an egg and
causes the cervical
mucus to thicken so
sperm can't reach the
egg.

Emergency Contraception
Used if a woman's primary
method of birth control fails.
It should not be used as a
regular method of birth
control.

Emergency contraception (morning after pill)
Emergency birth control is used to keep a
woman from getting pregnant when she has
had unprotected vaginal intercourse.
"Unprotected" can mean that no method of
birth control was used.
It can also mean that a birth control
method was used but did not work like a
condom breaking. Or, a woman may have
forgotten to take her birth control pills, or
may have been abused or forced to have sex.

Lactating Amenorrhea or LAM

- temporary
introductory
postpartum method
of postponing
pregnancy based on
physiological
infertility
experienced by
breast feeding
women

Mucus/Billings/Ovulation

abstaining from
sexual intercourse
during fertile
(wet) days
prevents
pregnancy

Basal Body Temperature
- identifying the
fertile and infertile
period of a womans
cycle by daily taking
and recording of the
rise in body
temperature during
and after ovulation

Symptothermal Method

- identifying the fertile
and infertile days of
the menstrual cycle as
determined through a
combination of
observations made on
the cervical mucus,
basal body temp
recording and other
signs of ovulation

Two Day Method
- is a simple fertility
awareness based
method of FP that
involves ----
cervical secretions as
an indicator of
fertility
women checking the
presence of
secretions everyday

Standard Days Method

a new method of
natural family
planning in which all
users with
menstrual cycles
between 26 and 32
days are counseled
to abstain from
sexual intercourse on
days 8 to 19 to
avoid pregnancy
