Whenever a short circuit occurs, a heavy current flows through
the equipment causing considerable damage to the equipment and
interruption of service. In order to avoid such a damage every part
of the power system is provided with a protective relaying system
and an associated switching device. This function is accomplished
by circuit breaker. Thus a circuit breaker will make or breaker circuit
either manually or automatically under different conditions such as
mo load, full load or short circuit.

It carries the full load current continuously without overheating or
damage.
CB can make or breaker a circuit on no load.
CB can break a circuit automatically under fault conditions.
It makes and breaks the normal operating current.

Operating Principle of CB:
Fig shows the basic elementaly diagram of CB. It is essentially
consists of two contacts, a fixed contact and a moving contact. A handle is
attached at the end of the moving contact. It can be operated manually or
automatically.
Under normal working conditions the emf produced in the secondary
winding of the transformer is insufficient to energizing the trip coil
completely for its operation. Thus the contacts remain in closed position
carrying the normal working current. The contacts can be opened manually
also by the handle.
Under abnormal or faulty condition high condition high current in the
primary winding of the current transformer induces sufficiently high e.m.f
in the secondary winding that that the trip coil is energized this will start
opening motion of the contacts. This action will not be instantaneous as
there is always a time lag between the energization of the trip circuit and the
actual opening of contact. The contact are moved towards right away from
fixed contacts.

Pure SF6gas is instant and thermally stable. It is having good
dielectric and arc extinguishimg properties. It is also an electronegative
gas and has strong tendency to absorb free electrons SF6 gas and has
strong tendency to absorb free electrons. SF6 gas remains in gaseous state
upto a temperature of 9.c. Its density is about five time of air and the free
heat conversion is 1.6 times as much as that of air. Also being inert it is
non-inflammable, and odorless.

Advantages of SF6 CB:
The size of sf6 breaker is smaller.
SF6 gas is non-inflammable and chemically and chemically stable.
Same gas is recirculated in the circuit hence requirement of gas is small.
The breaker is silent operation.
Minimum maintenance.
Disadvantage of SF6 CB:
Sealing problem arises due to the type of construction.
Imperfect joint lead to leakage of gas.
SF6 breaker is costly.
