Reading is an active, even
interactive process:
The reader has to make meaning from:
a) The visual (text, pictures) and
b) The non-visual (background knowledge)
information to interpret the text.
In order to do so, the reader and the writer share
the same code; the writer codifies the message
and the reader decodifies it.
PRINT AWARENESS
The main purpose of any text is to convey
a message.

The meaning is central, and any new
language item learnt on the way is an
incidental benefit.
