A Shared Vision for Tobacco Control
What do you want to happen?
To make tobacco free country, where
Government will never have to
prosecute any one for violation of
Tobacco control laws. Every citizen
respects the rights of other to breath in
clean air. County with out tobacco
industry and without any demand of
tobacco products.

What is happening now?
(Current Situation)

HOST (People):Pakistan's estimated population in 2014 is over 186 million,
making it the world's sixth-most-populous country, behind Brazil and ahead of
Nigeria. Currently Prevalence of smoking in male is 27 % &in female 1 %, while
there is increasing trend of use of smokeless tobacco. Prevalence of smokeless
tobacco in male is 28 % and in female 5 %, Sheesha use is also growing and in
male 22 & and female 15 %. 100,00 death annually due to Tobacco use.
AGENT (Tobacco Products):Cigratte, bidi, Sheesha, Naswar,
chewing tobacco, snuffs, gutka and main puri
ENVIRONMENT (Policies, Socio-Cultural, Norms):
using tobacco and smokeless tobacco is still
norms of society. But people are now raising voice
for their right to breath in fresh air.
Comprehensive law in Pak
VECTOR (Tobacco Industry):Two major TI in Pak. No
regulation of smokeless products. No major violation of
TI. Govt is very vigilant on tobacco control violation of
TI

Ms S is single parent & young journalist working in National news paper. She is
kind hearted, humbled non smoker lady.
Her husband died one year ago due to lung cancer. He was victim of tobacco use
and was chain smoker for past 20 years. At the time of death he was 35 year and
had 4 years of married life with two school going kids.
Ms S is quite sensitive and well aware of the consequences of tobacco use due to
her own personal experience.
She wants to perform her role in rasing awareness about tobacco hazards and to
share her own voice as tobacco victim.
She wants to develop active Journalist forum for the purpose.
She is willing to write article, news about subject. She is also willing to launch
campaign in the country for collecting voice against the tobacco and for lobbying
for the development of National Communication plan of communication . Because
being a journalist she knows the role of communication for advocacy on tobacco
control. Her group will also coordinate with civil society to put pressure on Govt.

Vision (Where we want to be): Tobacco Free Pakistan

Reality (Where we are now): Currently smoking Prevalence in male 27% and female
01%, smokeless prevalence in male 28 % and female 5%. Sheesha use 22% in male
and in female 15 %

Mismatch (Why is there a difference?) There are many areas on spider gram where
there is weakness; namely Political support, data, communication, Tobacco industry
interference. Out of these Communication is most important.
