Quarterback Play
Quarterback Pre-Snap
• Playing Quarterback
• 6 Sec Rule
• Shotgun Stance
• Under Center Stance
The Huddle
“A Brief, Efficient Business Meeting”
• How we conduct and break the huddle sets the tone for how
we will play once the ball is snapped…it must be disciplined,
focused, and unified!
• The Center sets the location of the huddle, then calls the
business meeting to order by giving the down and distance
situation.
• “The Six Second Rule” is a simple mental routine that each position has that
allows them to do their thinking before the play so that they can be prepared,
confident, and aggressive once the play begins, and be ready for anything that
might happen!
• The actual routine varies by position, but its basic elements are:
– WHAT IS MY JOB (or basic assignment) on this play?
– What, if anything, should I do with my ALIGNMENT to help me do this job?
– What is the Defense's basic alignment?
– Based on the defense I see, what will my FIRST 2-3 STEPS off the ball be?
– What ADJUSTMENTS might I have to make, based on the defense, to get my job
done?
Shotgun Stance
• Our quarterback will sit with his heals at five yards
• Feet shoulder width apart, staggered
– Right Handed QB’s = Left foot slightly ahead of right , right toe should
be at the instep of left foot.
– Left Handed QB’s = Right foot slightly ahead of Left, left toe should
be at the instep of right foot.
• Knees have a slight bend in the, but relaxed.
• Hips and shoulders pointing directly down field
• Hands are in a ready position, like a short stop waiting for a
groundball.
• Eyes will scan defense until cadence starts, then focus on the
snap from the center.
Run Game Mechanics
• Third Hand
• Outside Zone Read
• Inside Zone Read
Outside Zone
• Quarterback will receive snap and immediately
eye down the backside defensive end away
from the call. He will keep eyes focused on
him while he reads his play. If he stays home he
will seat the ball into the running backs near
side number. If the defensive end crashes hard
and follows the running back, the Quarterback
will pull the ball and continue to run it himself.
Inside Zone
• Quarterback will receive snap and this time
will immediately step forward and open hips
to opposite defensive end. This helps for two
reasons, first it helps keep the running back on
track for where the hole opens up and secondly
opening the hips to the back side defensive end
will help our Quarterback read him and decide
whether or not to pull the ball and run
Passing Game
• Quick Drop
• Quick Game
• 5 Step Game
5 Step Game
• More of a true three step
• On the snap of the ball the quarterback will
back pedal out.
• Allows more time to see the defense and his
read player
• Will cross over on the third step and anchor
