What is IPTV
IPTV is broadcast quality television and Video signal that are
delivered to Subscribers or viewers using a broadband connection
over Internet Protocol. It does not mean the television Content is
streaming over internet.

Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is a system through which

internet television services are delivered using the architecture and
networking methods of the Internet Protocol Suite over a packet
switched network infrastructure

Terminology

DTV (Digital Television):Digital television is a process or

system that transmits video images through the use of digital
transmission. The digital transmission is divided into channels
for digital video and audio.

IP Broadcast :Internet protocol broadcast (IP broadcast) is a

data packet that uses a frame address mask of 255.255.255.255
for identification that it is intended for broadcast distribution

STB (Set Top Box):An IP Set Top box is an electronic device

that adapts IP television data into a format that is accessible by
the end user. The output of an IP set top box can be a television
RF channel (e.g. channel 3), video and audio signals or digital
video signals.

ToIP (Telephone over IP):A process of providing telephony

services using Internet protocol (IP).

VOD (Video On Demand):Video on demand is a service that
provides end users to interactively request and receive video
services.

VS (Video Server):Video server receive newly encoded digital content

that is uploaded from the streaming server.

Architecture

Advantages
Limitations

Architecture
two main types of video server architectures that can be
considered for IPTV deployment, centralized, and
distributed.
1.

2.

The centralized architecture model is a relatively

simple and easy to manage solution. Because all
contents are stored in centralized servers.
A distributed architecture is just as scalable as the
centralized model, however it has bandwidth usage
advantages and inherent system management
features that are essential for managing a larger
server network .

Protocols

IPTV covers both live TV (multicasting) as well as

stored video (Video on Demand VOD
The playback of IPTV requires either a personal
computer or a "set-top box" connected to a TV
Video content is typically compressed using either a
MPEG-2 or a MPEG-4 codec
an MPEG transport stream delivered via IP Multicast
in case of live TV or via IP Unicast in case of Video
on Demand.
IP Multicast is a method in which information can be
sent to multiple computers at the same time
The newly released (MPEG4) H.264 codec is
increasingly used to replace the older MPEG2 codec

Advantages

High speed Internet access :High speed Internet access is the

ability for a user or device to connect to the Internet with data
transmission rates of at least 500 kbps or higher.

VoIP : voice over Internet protocol is the process of providing audio

signals through communication systems that use IP data packets.

Interactivity :Interactivity is the ability of a person to be able to

identify, select and control some or all of the presentation of media.

Better compression :IPTV provide better compression ratio.

Triple Play :Triple play refers to providing of three main services

such as data, voice, and video on one network.

Limitations

Packet Loss :IPTV is sensitive to

packet loss. The number of data
packets that have been lost in
transmission over the entire
transmission period
Delay:delays if streamed data is
unreliable. delay is the time interval or
phase difference between transmission
and the reception of a signal.

Conclusion
1. IPTVs technology advantage is unicast streaming
which enables it to offer on-demand everything
2. Unicast enables new revenue models with VOD,
relevant video advertising, membership content,
plus local, regional, and instructional content
3. Unicast serves consumer and commercial needs
that are not served by cable or satellite today
4. It is very important to design the IPTV network
to enable unicast streaming everywhere
5. Without differentiated value, IPTV will face an
uphill battle against cable and satellite
