Cellular Respiration and

Photosynthesis
Live Session S1W13

Photosynthesis

In what part of a plant cell does photosynthesis take

place?
Can other organisms besides plants use photosynthesis?
Complete the formula for photosynthesis:
6H2O + 6____ ----------> C6H12O6+ 6O2

Photosynthesis

What are the four environmental factors that can impact

the rate of photosynthesis?

Cellular Respiration

Does this formula look familiar?

Cellular respiration relies on photosynthesis to occur.

Glycolysis
Glycolysis is the breakdown of food in the cellular
cytoplasm.
All organisms perform glycolysis.
2 PHASES:
In phase 1: the phosphate group from an ATP attaches
to the glucose, transferring some of the energy from ATP
to the glucose. This leaves ATP in its lower energy form,
ADP. Phosphorylation occurs at two steps early in
glycolysis to convert the 6-carbon glucose into modified
6-carbon molecules.

Halfway through glycolysis, the 6-carbon molecule is

split into two 3-Carbon Pyruvic Acid molecules

Glycolysis (Continued)
PHASE 2:
The second phase of glycolysis releases the energy stored
in the modified glucose molecules.
In this set of steps, NAD+ is converted into NADH + H+.
NADH is an energy carrier molecule that shuttles some of
the energy from glycolysis to other processes. Also, ATP
molecules are created as ADP removes phosphate groups
from the modified 3-carbon molecules.
The final product for glycolysis is two 3-carbon
pyruvate molecules and a net gain of two ATP and
two NADH for every glucose molecule that enters the
glycolysis process.

Break Out Rooms

You will explain what can happen after glycolysis. One
group will talk about the Krebs Cycle, the other group
will talk about the Electron Transport Chain.
In eukaryotic cells, where does this process occur?
How much ATP (energy) is produced, if any?
Is oxygen necessary for the event to occur?

Do you think humans could survive without this process?

Anaerobic Pathway: Fermentation

Most anaerobic metabolic processes do not produce ATP

but instead regenerate NAD+, which allows for the
continued production of ATP through glycolysis .
Most organisms ferment pyruvate into other chemicals
such as lactate.
