Background of the Study


From the result of pre-test, the researcher found the problem in which
students of class VIII B1 of SMP Negeri 6 Singaraja had low ability in
comprehending reading text. The teacher usually taught using lecturing
method by staying in class and doing the exercises on the handbook. In
relation to the problem the researcher is interested to use DRTA strategy to
overcome the problem that faced by the students to improve their ability in
reading comprehension.
Statement of Problem:
Can the achievement in reading
comprehension of class VIII B1 students
at SMP Negeri 6 Singaraja in the
academic year 2012/2013 be improved
through the use of DRTA strategy in
reading recount text?

Objective of the Study:


To improve the students achievement
of reading comprehension in class
VIII B1 at SMP Negeri 6 Singaraja in
reading recount text through the use
of DRTA strategy.

understanding comes from the interaction between the words
that are written and how they trigger knowledge outside the
text/message. (Rayner, Foorman, Perfetti, Pesetsky, &
Seidenberg, 2001)

REORIENTATION (Nurohman, 2011)

is a strategy that is conceptualized and refined by (Stauffer,


1969).DRTA is a comprehension strategy that encourages
students to make predictions while they are reading. After
reading segments of a text, students stop, confirm or revise
previous predictions, and make new predictions about what
they will read next. (Conner, 2006)

Research Subject and Object


The subjects were the students of class VIII B1 at SMP Negeri 6
Singaraja .There were 31 students, 18 males and 13 females. The
object was reading comprehension of students class VIII.
Research Design
This study was designed in the form of classroom action-based
research.

Conclusions
DRTA strategy could improve the students achievement of reading
comprehension in class VIII B1 at SMP Negeri 6 Singaraja in reading recount
text.
1. In pre-test, was 49.19 (insufficient). Post-test I was 62.26 (sufficient). Posttest II was 75.97 (good). The students achievement in post-test I improved
13.07 points compared to the mean score of pre-test. The students mean
score in post-test II improved 13.71 points to the mean score of post-test I.
2. The percentage of the students who passed the standard score (70). On
pre-test, there were 4 students (12.90%) had score 70, post-test I
increased become 14 students (45.16%) , post-test II had been increased
become 31 students (100%).
3. The result of questionnaire indicated that most of the students gave
positive response toward the application of DRTA strategy.
