Example of student project

The Stair Climb Assist (SCA) is a

mechanized knee brace that is meant to aid
people with bad knees by carrying some of
the weight felt by users.
The SCA uses a wire cable and reel system
that is connected to a DC motor that
controls the system. Sensors are used to
create data about the condition of the knee.
That data is then fed to a microprocessor
which determines whether the brace should
turn on or off.

The sand weighing machine in the

mechatronics lab looks very simple in
principle but it contains many complications
and subtle problems that pose a real
challenge for your ingenuity.

A concern field robotics is providing a simple

and robust scheme for expressing maps and
scans for later assessment by a human
operator. In the case of demining, scanning
assistance robots, such as the Gryphon robot,
generate maps of potential mine threats
based on multiple metal detector scans of a
particular area.

The UBC Two-Wheeled Robot (TW Robot) is a

device capable of balancing itself on two
wheels only.
This Robot is specifically designed for a
controls course, enabling students to
implement custom controller algorithm in
real world applications.
