BRAKING & JACKING

SYSTEM IN GENERATOR

TECHNICAL DATA OF
BRAKING & JACKING
SYSTEM

No. of brake/jack units : 6

Total brake lining area : 858000 mm2

Brake pad material : Non-asbestos, non-metallic

friction material

Pad thickness : 32 mm

Pad clearance with brake track : 3 mm minimum

Time for machine to come to standstill from 30% speed (brake application time)
: 7 mins

Nominal brake operating air pressure : 290 kPa

Nominal jack operating oil pressure : 9.7MPa

GENERAL
DESCRIPTION

The braking and jacking system comprises six brake assemblies (501),
compressed air equipment, a mobile HP oil hand pump unit, a braking and
jacking unit assembly and the associated pipework and valves. The brake
assemblies are mounted on the bottom bearing housing and act on a brake track
on the underside of the rotor.

The units are operated either by low pressure air for braking, or by hydraulic
pressure for jacking the rotor for maintenance. The distance between the brake
pads and the brake track is a minimum of 3 mm. During normal shutdown of the
generator, the brakes are applied automatically when the generator speed has
dropped to 10% of rated speed. The brakes are released when the control
system has determined that shutdown has been completed and the rotor is
stationary. The selection of either brake air or jacking oil to the brake/jack
manifold pipe is controlled by manually operated inter-coupled (ganged) valves
510-V1 and 550-V5

During emergency shutdown, the brakes are applied at 20 to 25% of rated

ASSEMBLY OF JACKING SYSTEM

The braking and jacking unit assembly contains the hydraulic
and pneumatic control equipment to supply either brake air or
jacking oil, as selected, to the brake assemblies on the machine.
Air supply to the control unit is received from the Station air
supply via a reducing valve and pressure switch assembly.

Oil is supplied from a mobile HP oil hand pump unit. During

normal operation of the generator, the oil supply to the control
unit is disconnected and the inlet connection blanked off.
