INTRODUCTION

Utility fog-Envisioned by Dr.John Storrs Hall in

2001
Based on concept of Molecular Nanotechnology
Conglomeration of 100 micron Robotic cells or
Foglets
Programmable to simulate most physical
properties
Mainly applied in Space Exploration

BEHIND THE SCENE

The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of
A little robot called FOGLET consists of human
cell size device
Bigger than most nano-tech conceptions
Swarm of Foglets is called Utility Fog
Can simulate any environment
It enables
-Creation
-Levitation
-Manipulation
-Teleportation
-Shape-shifting

Fiat 500

MODES OF OPERATION
Basically two modes
A. Native mode

Mobility Concept - Foglets move in different

directions and perform mechanic al
operations
Example:
Table- solid and locked
Fan- solid component with moving joints

B.Fog mode

Static Concept- Static foglets Pixelate

to transmit information and sound
Example:
Display screen on immovable objects
with 100 micron resolution with a
processing power of 286 PC

EXPANSION OF A FOGLET

HOW TO BUILD A FOG?

Exoskeleton made up of Aluminium

oxide
Each foglet has 12 arms arranged
on faces of Dodecahedron
Arms with swivel joint at the base
4 degree of freedom
3 grippers on each arm for
interconnection between foglets

FOGLET

IN DETAIL

FOGLET-INTERNAL SCHEMATIC

Spherical central body-10 microns

12 telescopic arms-50 microns long and 5
microns in diameter
HYDROGEN FUEL TANK- Hydrogen ions
combine with oxygen to produce electricity
and water vapour as by product
Communication-Takes commands from
user, processes using pre-processor and
passes results among other foglets

THE GRIP

Four basic Components

1.COUPLERS
- Communication and Power Control
2.OPTICAL WAVEGUIDE
- Communication from user
3.POWER AND ELECTRICAL TRANSMISSION
LINES
-Power Supply in the foglet
4.GRIPPERS
- Locking foglets together

INTERLINKING

OF FOGLETS

Foglet

PROPERTIES

Microcontroller based system

700KW power consumed/cc for movement
1m/sec absolute movement speed
1000 psi tensile strength
Individual foglets can communicate with each
other.
Can contract upto 40% in any linear direction
Specific gravity 0.2 and occupies 10% of the
volume of air

USES AND APPLICATION

To build efficient machines for long distance

information propagation and physical transportation
For local use and interface with worldwide network
Space Researches
- Manages pressure in space suits
- No worries on floating off the ship
Shape shifting reduces wastage of space
Enables efficient use of resources
Life made easy

ADVANTAGES OF AN UTILITY FOG

ENVIRONMENT

Major advantage for space-filling Fog is safety

Fog forms a dynamic form-fitting cushion
Protect its inhabitants from the (physical) effects
of a nuclear weapon
All the physical manipulation, transport,
assembly, and so forth would be done by the Fog

Limitations

Can be seen only using Holographic lens

Cannot simulate very hard metals
Lack of self-intelligence
Cannot handle anything requiring chemical
reactions
Cannot form food or water
Cannot produce high temperature

CONCLUSION

Replacement for all different technologies

around us
More compatible and sophisticated form
expected
Such powers, as in magic, that we turn
out to be witches and wizards
Wonder World making life easy and lazy
