INTRODUCTION
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there are about 2
billion people worldwide who consume alcoholic beverages and 76.3 million
with diagnosable alcohol use disorders.
Alcohol consumption has health and social consequences via intoxication

(drunkenness), alcohol dependence, and other biochemical effects of alcohol.

Alcoholconsumption can have adverse social and economic effects on the

individual drinker, the drinkers immediate environment and society as a

whole.
Indeed, individuals other than the drinker can be affected, for example, by

traffic accidents or violence.

Alcoholconsumption can affect work performance in several ways:

Absences
Work accidents
Productivity
Unemployment
Since GIS is a discipline which integrates both Science and Socio
economic facts effectively to analyze community problem, in this case
study an attempt is made to identify the number of wine shops that are
located near the educational Institutions and at the commercial place in
the central part of Madurai city.

STUDY
AREA
Madurai is an academic centre of
learning of literature for centuries. There are
47 approved institutions of the university are
in and around the city consisting of
autonomous colleges, aided colleges, selffinancing colleges, constituent colleges,
evening colleges and other approved
institutions.

MADURAI CITY

In this case study an attempt is made to

identify the number of wine shops that are
located near the educational Institutions and
at the commercial place in the central part of
Madurai city.
Goripalayam, Periyar and narimedu were
chosen as study areas, to analyze the geolocation of TASMAC. These areas cover most of
the educational institutes, hotels, commercial
and residential areas.

Collection of Data

The location of wine shops , colleges and schools were collected using the
GPS (Global Positioning System) navigation device.
These points were collected by visiting the field directly.

Digitization of road map from Google Earth

The road map for the Madurai city was digitized from Google Earth.
Google Earthis avirtual globe, mapandgeographicalinformation program that
was originally called Earth Viewer 3D.
From this imagery data each road of Madurai city has been digitized and assigned
name for each street.
The (.kml) file obtained from the Google earth was then converted into shape file
using GLOBAL MAPPER for compatibility to ARC GIS for further analysis.

Digitization of Ward map

Madurai ward map was downloaded and georeferenced with
toposheet of Madurai city. All the 72 wards of Madurai
Corporation were digitized using ARCGIS .

Creation

&

integration

of

Geo

database
The GPS points collected for Wine shops, Colleges, Schools and Hospitals,
were fed into excel sheet. The lat long values were converted into
decimal values to integrate with the digitized road map using ARCGIS

Thematic Map Generation

After creating different layers for schools, colleges, wine shops, 72
wards, ward wise population thematic maps were generated

Buffer analysis
A 1Km and 2Km buffer were created around the wine shops near

Periyar bus stand

Goripalayam.

Result and Discussion

As per a G.O., no wine shop should be established in municipal
corporations and municipalities within 50 m from any place of worship or
educational institution.
Any kind of liquor/wine shop should be away from residential areas and
places of worship. the places near school, colleges, hostels and universities
should also be kept free from such shops for good teaching-learning
environment.
As per the Excise Policy, dated June 18, 2012, liquor vending premises
must be at least 100 meters away from places of public worship,
educational institutions and hospitals, and at least 50 meters away from
highways.

Conclusion
The sample study covers only small part of the Madurai city.
This it-self clearly shows that more number of wine shops are very
close to Schools and colleges.

Reducing the number of TASMAC;

Controlling the hours of operation, and
Restricting the number of TASMAC or the areas in which
TASMAC can be operated.
