FORMULATION OF

OBJECTIVE

What is Research
Research is the
systematic
process
of
collecting
and
analyzing
information (data) in order to
increase our understanding of
the trend about which we are
concerned or interested.

DEFINATION :
Research is a systematized effort to
gain new knowledge
- Redman
and Money.
Research is a process of steps used
to collect and analyze information to
increase our understanding of a
topic or issue
-

FORMULATION OF
OBJECTIVE :
Once the research topic
is decided the next step
is to formulate the
objective.

The objective provide : More details about the Research

work .
Define it more precisely.
Define its scope in concrete
terms.
Determine the limits as every
research must focus on a limited
area.

They precisely state the logic of

the research inquiry.

They provide the structured

system for undertaking the
research.
They provide the information
about research design and the
methods
to
be
used
for
investigation.

BASIC PRINCIPLES :
They should be Precise.
They should be Concise.
They should be Limited in
number .
[ generally up to five ]

They should
comprehensively cover all
proposed
investigation
areas.
The next process is writing
the objectives clearly.

They are often set in the form

of four or five simple sentences
but , it requires a lot of thought
to write them.

The general mistakes are to

form objectives which are either
not suitable to research or are
not feasible.

Illustration through example

If the work is related to financial analysis of capital
structure of selected Indian companies over a
limited time period then the researcher should first
of all have full knowledge of what is meant by
capital structure, what is the theoretical basis of
analysis of capital structure, why is it important for
a company to have full knowledge of its capital
structure, what are the parameters which
determine the efficiency of the capital structure,
what are the impact of various regulations on the
capital structure, what are the latest developments
in the theories related to capital strictures etc. For
all these a simple objective would be

To undertake a theoretical
investigation of capital structure.

The next stage of the exercise

would be related to the actual
examination
of
the
capital
structure
of
the
selected
companies in the chosen time
period. This part would be based
on the data collected for the
selected companies. Therefore the
next objective would be:

To examine the actual capital structure

of the selected Indian companies.
Accordingly the next two objectives would be
To compare the actual capital structure
of the companies with the theoretical
ideal structure.
To identify and analyze the impact of
the quantitative factors which cause a
change in the capital structure of the
companies

Since every research has to come

out with some ultimate suggestions
the last objective would be:

To identify the companies with

the best capital structure and to
suggest measures to improve
the capital structure.

Therefore the
proper formation of
the objective ensure
the success of he
research exercise.
