USING FLOW MAPS TO ENHANCE

PUPILS UNDERSTANDING OF
TEXT
IN AN URBAN PRIMARY SCHOOL
IN SARAWAK

ABSTRACT
Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah (KSSR) was introduced in early
2011 as an effort to restructure and improve the current curriculum to
ensure that students have the relevant knowledge, skills and values to
face the challenges of the 21st century. The nations leaders were
concerned that the new generation of Malaysian would not be able to
compete with the other working population of the world once the era of
globalization has emerged. The new school curriculum is also deemed
to be in compliance with the global standard of education. This will
ensure that the students who have undergone the KSSR school
curriculum would be competitive in terms of skills and knowledge on the
global work market. Many elements were introduced under the new
school curriculum in the effort to ensure that the new generation of
Malaysians possesses the appropriate skills and knowledge which is
required by other countries in the world. One of the elements which is
deemed as an important prerequisite to the achievement of the
demand for a highly skilled worker at the global market is the Higher
Order Thinking Skills (HOTS).

FOCUS
With this concept in mind, the research is aimed to prove the following:
1. That using flow maps enabled the pupils mind to hold information in their
working
memory long enough for the information to be more extensively
processed.
2. That using flow maps provide the pupils with the skills to process the
written message and go beyond the surface layer of the text.

Thus with regards to the research aims, the following research questions
have been formulated to meet the objectives of the research. The research
questions are as follows:

1. Does using flow maps enabled the pupils mind to hold information in their
working
memory long enough for the information to be more extensively
processed?
2. Does using flow maps provide the pupils with the skills to process the
written message and go beyond the surface layer of the text?
