OBJECTIVE

FORMULA
POSITIVE SENTENCE
S + V-2 + Complement
For examples:
The client refused water last night.
The patient vomited just now.
The man felt so much pain this morning.
I injected the patient just now.

NEGATIVE SENTENCE
S + DID + NOT + V-1 + Complement
For examples:
The client didnt refuse water last night.
The patient didnt vomit just now.
The man didnt feel so much pain this morning.
I didnt inject the patient just now.

DID + S + V-1 + Complement

FUNCTIONS
1. Something that began and ended at
a specific time in the past

Jimmy called Dr. Kane just now.


Nurse Rosemary saved the patients life
by giving CPR last week.
The patient with a chronic cancer died
five minutes ago.

2. An activity that began earlier than the
other activity.
When the patient screamed for help, the

was not enough equipment available in his
hospital.

RULES
Predicate form : Verb-2
Auxiliary:
Did = for all subjects
No auxiliary is needed in positive sentences. The
auxiliary only exists in negative and interrogative
sentences. If it exists, the main verb should be V-1.
Time expressions:
yesterday, last night, last week, last month, last
year, last Saturday night.

POSITIVE SENTENCE

S + was/were + V-ing + Complement


For examples:
While Dr. Myers was injecting the client, nurse
Sandy called him.
Nurse Mary was washing the instruments when
the phone rang.
The patients were sleeping when his kids came.

FORMULA
NEGATIVE SENTENCE

S + was/were + not + V-ing + Complement


For examples:
While Dr. Myers wasnt injecting the client, nurse
Sandy called him.
Nurse Mary wasnt washing the instruments
when the phone rang.
The patients werent sleeping when his kids
came.

INTERROGATIVE SENTENCE

Was/were + S + V-ing + Complement


For examples:
Was Dr. Myers injecting the client, when nurse
Sandy called him.
Was nurse Mary washing the instruments when
the phone rang.
Were the patients sleeping when his kids came.

FUNCTIONS
1. An activity that was in progress when the
next action/event occurred in the past.
We were studying English when someone

knocked at the door.


The students were listening to the lecturers
explanation when the late students came into
the classroom.

FUNCTIONS
2. Two activities that were in progress at the
same time simultaneously.
The doctor was reviewing the report while
the two nurses were preparing the patient.
The student nurse was talking to the
patient while the doctor was examining the
chest.

Predicate form : Verb-ing


Auxiliary:
was
= for single subject and I
were = for plural subjects and you
The auxiliaries (was/were) are needed in
all kinds of sentences to precede the V-ing.
