5052 Aluminium Alloy

5052 is an aluminium alloy, is primarily alloyed with

magnesium and chromium.

It has good work ability, static strength and high fatigue
strength.
It also has low density and excellent thermal conductivity
common to all aluminium alloys
It is commonly used in tube, sheet and plate form.

Application
Electrical conductors.
Transport.
Packaging.
Building and architecture.
High pressure gas cylinders.
Machined component.
Road barriers and signs.
Sports equipment
Miscellaneous application.

Anodizing

Anodizing is the conversion coating of the

surface of aluminum and its alloys to porous

aluminum oxide.
The process derives its name from the fact that

the aluminum part to be coated becomes the

anode in an electrolytic cell.
This differentiates it from electroplating, in

which the part is made the cathode

CONTD.
Anodizing of aluminum can be accomplished in a

wide variety of electrolytes, employing varying

operating conditions including concentration and
composition of the electrolyte, presence of any
additive, temperature and voltage.

Properties Enhanced
Increase corrosion resistance.
Improve decorative appearance.
Increase abrasion resistance.
Improve adhesive bonding.
Improve lubricity.

Objective
The objective of this research is to study the effect of

magnesium on thickness of porous layer and texture of

anodized layer at various tempratures

Methodology
Selection of a suitable specimen(Al-Mg alloy) preferably

AA5052.
Specimen will be etched in a solution contain NaOH.
For anodizing a thermostatic cell will be used as counter
electrode.
Anodizing will be carried out in sulphuric acid bath.

CONTD.
Temperature of the bath will be varied between 25 o and 60o

C.
Voltage will be kept constant at 15V.
DC power supply will be used.
After anodizing the specimen will be rinsed with deionized
water and dried in cool air stream.
Thickness of the oxide film will be measured by eddy
current.
EDX and SEM will be used to examine the resultant
specimen.

Facilities and
Equipment
Electrolyte Bath
Electrolyte
Al-Mg foil
SEM
EDX

Utilization of Research
The research will be helpful to academics and industries

like aerospace, automotive and transportation.
