INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN
RAILWAYS

HISTORY :

Inauguration of Indian Railway

performed on 16th April 1853 .
First passenger train introduced
from Mumbai to Thane.
A British engineer Robert Maitland
responsible for expansion of Indian
Railway.
In 1951 IR nationalized as one unit.
4

Indian Railway life line of nation

IR divided into 17 zones & zones

subdivided into 69 divisions.
Every day 23 million people travel in
thousands of trains.
IR have 12617 passenger trains &
9017 locomotives.
There are 7172 stations over total
route length 65436 km. under IR.
5

SIGNALING :

All over the world train transportation

depends on signaling
Signals indicate to driver to movement of
train.
Number of train with in single day can
increase by proper signaling.

Presently IR using Optical fiber cables (OFC) to

provide fix signaling .
OFCs laid down along the track .

Advantages of using OFC : Free from EMI & REI .

Very high traffic carrying
capacity .
Negligible cross talk between
channels .
Less prone to theft.

DATA LOGGING SYSTEM

It is microprocessor based system

which logs (store) all events related to
train monitoring.
The instrument is called data logger.
Technically it is a device which read
the electrical signals & store it in
internal memory.
It is also use for train tracking .
8

Component of Data Logger

System.
1) Front end processor (FEP) :IT IS MOTOROLA 68000 micro processor
It has 4 serial ports.
2)Computer at control room :Function of this computer is to receive data
online from FEP.
3) Modem :Used for data transfer between computer &
FEP.

Graphical display of status

11

Advantages of data logger

system

Effective control on planning &

monitoring of train movement.
Train chart became more accurate.
Easy to installation & low
maintenance.
Online graphical display.
It have a facility to analysis of past
event.
12

Limitations :1)

2)

3)

4)

Networking communication media

should work perfectly.
Train controller should have
computer knowledge.
Continuous track circuiting is
required.
All the station should be equipped
with data logger
13

INTREACTIVE VOICE RESPONSE

SYSTEM

It is a system by which information regarding

public reservation, arrival, departure & fare of
train can delivered to user through telephone.
It have two parts :1)hardware part :
Data eatery terminal , modem , IVRS terminal
2) software part :
Copets software
Oliris software

14

Hardware
Hardware part
part
1) Data entry terminal :
It is computer of 166 MHz with 10 mb , 2.1 GB
hard disk.
2) IVRS terminal :
It is also computer of 133 MHz with 24 port
4 ports for voice entry,2 ports for PSTN line,2
ports for fare inquiry,16 ports for train
enquiry.
3 ) Modem :It used to transfer data between data entry
terminal & IVRS terminal.
15

Software part

Copets software :It is used to record train schedule timing .

Entry for expected arrival and departure.
Communication software :Facility to transfer the file as pre decided
by hub.
Oliris software :Used to select more than one language.

conclusion

During training ,I same to know about

signaling & its working.
Training helped me to get knowledge
various system of train monitoring .
It also enhance my technical skills.
