Two Schools under One

Roof???
Two schools under One Roof is the
name for segregated schools in some
school institutions in Bosnia and
Herzegovina.
In the same building we have two schools.
Mainly those schools are in Federation
BiH.
Usually, we have Croatian and Bosniaks
school in one building. Bosniaks use
Bosnian curriculum, and Croatians use the
curriculum that is mainly directed to the
curriculum of Republic Croatia.

Historical facts

"Two schools under one roof are a direct consequence of the

Bosniak-Croatian conflict (1992-1994) and the creation of
the self-proclaimed Croatian para-state of Herceg-Bosna in
Bosnia and Herzegovina."
Croats in the Federation opposed the integration of
education, fearing that they will thereby lose their national
identity, assimilating in Bosniak majority, and Bosniaks
opposed separation fearing fueling the disintegration of
Bosnia and Herzegovina.
As a compromise, "12 June 2003rd The Peace
Implementation Council (PIC) has called on the Federal
Ministry of Education to implement the unification of the
two schools under one roof to the next school year. "
"These schools have emerged the year 2000 as the
international community to refugee returns more attractive
(Douglas Davidson in 2005, and according to Powell, 2009).

differential treatment, including any exclusion, restriction or
preference based on real or assumed by any person or group of
persons ...'' on the basis of their personal characteristics / identity.
Distinguishes between direct ('' intentional''); indirect ('' hidden'')
discrimination, then harassment, sexual harassment, mobbing,
segregation, instruction to discrimination, incitement to
discrimination as a form of discrimination.
Segregation (Latin Segregare - distinguish, disassembled), is by
definition a form of discrimination, "the separation of people based
on different criteria which are generally conflict with the principles
of human rights and freedoms"

Two Schools under One Roof integration

Effort for bringing the common parts of curriculum
But, Husremovic at all (2007.) found out that the
national group of courses (mothern language,
Geography, History, and Religion) engourage the
segregation.
The exception, makes Brko District, in which
most of the children attend classes together, while
national group of courses children to attend part
together, and partly separately.
In other schools in Federal part, integration means
the integration of teachers councel, but classes
are stil monoethnical.

National identity vs.

Nationalism
National identity (Aljevi M.2010)
means awareness of belonging to a
particular ethnic group, which
includes the existence of shared
beliefs, values and goals.
This awareness that we belong to a
social group meets our social needs,
in the way that we feel comfortable
because we are "one of them".

Development of identity

Two-dimensional model assumes that an individual may be

independently linked to their own, minority and dominant culture.
According to the degree of identification with the minority and
the dominant group distinguishes four types of orientation
(Phinney, 1990).
Biculturalism refers to a strong identification with both cultures.
This orientation refers to people who accept their origin and
nurture this relationship and at the same time to the same extent
accept and appreciate the culture in which they live (which is
dominant).
Assimilation is a strong identification with the dominant and weak
with its own culture.
Separation is a strong identification with their own, and weak with
the dominant culture. Such orientation is found in ghettoized
culture.
The marginalization of the weak identification with any culture.

School segregation as a factor of

development national
identity/nationalism

In BiH national identity means the accentuation

of differences, which definetely helps in
developing nationalism.
Two school under one roof acctualy means
recriuting the young generation for new wars.
The literature (textbook) policy helps in
development ot nationalism and negative
emotions towards others.
In multiethincal schools children learn how to
live in that kind of society, without the accent of
differences, but contrary.
