Introduction to Computer Viruses

• VIRUS: Vital Information Resoures Under Seize

• Computer program which invade a computer and try to
take over its functions,Rather like biological viruses do
with human cells.
• Most of us with computer experience
have had deal with such such viruses
from time to time
What is a Computer Virus

• A virus is a small piece of software that

piggybacks on real programs in order to get
executed
• Once it’s running, it spreads by inserting copies
of itself into other executable code or documents
• A virus is a program or piece of code that is
loaded onto your computer without your
knowledge and runs against your wishes.”
COMPUTER VIRUS

Types of computer viruses

• Resident Viruses • Overwrite Viruses
• Non Resident Viruses
• Macro Viruses • Directory Viruses
Network Viruses •
• Polymorphic Viruses
• Logic Bombs
• Companion Viruses • File Infectors
Boot Sector Viruses
• • Fat Viruses
• Multipartite Virus
• Direct Action Viruses • Worms
Stealth Viruses
• • Trojan Horses
• E-mail Viruses
COMPUTER VIRUS
Resident Viruses
Resident viruses are permanent which dwells
in RAM memory
It can overcome and interrupt all of the operation
executed by the system

Non-Resident Viruses

It consist finder module and a replication module

Finder module find new files to infect and calls
replicate module to infect that file
COMPUTER VIRUS

Macro Viruses
It infect files that are created using certain application or programs that
contain macros

Network Viruses
These viruses rapidly spreads through LAN, and

sometimes throughout the internet. Network

viruses multiply through shared resoures.
Logic Bombs
The logic bomb is a piece of code that are
inputted into a software system. When a certain

or specific condition is met, the logic bomb virus

COMPUTER VIRUS

Boot Sector virus

Boot sector virus hide in the boot sector, either in the
bootable disk or the hard drive.this virus does not harm the
files in hard disk, but harm the hard disk itself.

Multipartite Viruses
These viruses are spread through infected media and
usually hides in memory. These viruses move to the boot
sector of hard drive and infects executable files on hard drive
and later across the system

Direct Action Virus

Its purpose is to replicate and take action when it is
executed
COMPUTER VIRUS

Stealth Viruses
stealth virus can hide itself by intercepting the antivirus
software’s request to read the file and passing request to
the virus ,instead of OS and show file is clean to antivirus
software.
Overwrite Virus
These viruses deletes the information contained in
the file and fill it with useless information

Directory Virus
These viruses change the paths that indicates the
location of a directory.
COMPUTER VIRUS

File Infectors
The majority of the existing viruses belong to this
category. This virus infect the executable programs
and produce damaging efects

Worms

• Worms – is a small piece of software that uses computer
networks and security holes to replicate itself. A copy of the
worm scans the network for another machine that has a
specific security hole. It copies itself to the new machine using
the security hole, and then starts replicating from there.
COMPUTER VIRUS

Trojan Horses

It is simply a program which claims to be a game but

instead does damage when you run it
COMPUTER VIRUS

WHAT CAN THEY

DO ?

• FORMAT DISK
• COPY, RENAME AND DELETE FILES
• COPY THEMSELVES WITH NEW CONFIGURATION
INFORMATION
• MODIFY FILE DATES AND EXTENSIONS
• CALL OTHER COMPUTERS TO UPLOAD AND DOWN
LOAD FILES
COMPUTER VIRUS

Typical things that some current

Personal Computer (PC) viruses do
• Display a message
• Erase files
• Scramble data on a hard disk
• Cause erratic screen behavior
• Halt the PC
• Many viruses do nothing obvious at all
except spread!
COMPUTER VIRUS

What they don’t do

They can not infect write protected disks
They do not infect compressed
filesCOMPUTER VIRUS
They do not infect computer hardware
Macintosh viruses do not infect DOS / Window
computer software and vice versa
COMPUTER VIRUS

How Does a Computer Get a Virus?

• On downloading files
from the Internet.
• On opening an e-mail
attachment.
• On copying programs or
files from any other
infected computer.
COMPUTER VIRUS

How do viruses spread

✱ APPENDING
✱ INSERTION
✱ INTERCEPTION
✱ REDIRECTION

REPLACEMENT
COMPUTER VIRUS

How a virus spread via network ?

HOW DO YOU NOTICE ?
COMPUTER
VIRUS

COMPUTER OPERATION BECOMES SLUGGISH

PROGRAMS TAKE LONGER TO LOAD
 UNUSUAL AND FREQUENT ACCESS TO DISK

DISK SPACE DECREASES RAPIDLY
 BAD DISK SECTORS STEADILY INCREASE

 RAM DECREASES SUDDENLY OR STEADILY

COMPUTER HALTS
•PROGRAMS ENCOUNTER ERRORS
•FILES REPLACED WITH GARBAGE
•FILE ATTRIBUTES AND DATA CHANGE
WHAT TO DO ?
COMPUTER
ANTI VIRUS

• SAFE COMPUTING METHODS

• ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE SYSTEMS
• PREVENTION SYSTEM
• DETECTION SYSTEM
• SURGICAL APPROACH
COMPUTER VIRUS

SURGICAL APPROACH

• Empty the House - TAKE OUT ALL HOUSE HOLD

ITEMS
• DISINFECT THE EMPTY HOUSE
• CLEAN AND DISINFECT EACH HOUSE HOLD ITEM AND
BRING IT BACK ONE BY ONE
• START NORMAL LIFE
COMPUTER VIRUS

CONCLUSION
“LEARN TO LIVE WITH IT”

• SAFE COMPUTING TECHNIQUES

• MANAGE SOFTWARE PIRACY
• EDUCATE USERS
• KEEP ABREAST OF THE LATEST VIRUS AND
ANTIVIRUS
