OUR PROBLEM: AIR

POLLUTION

OUR PROBLEM: AIR POLLUTION

The fossil fuel combustion from
vehicles has been identified as the
largest cause of air pollution in the
world. According to the Union of
Concerned Scientists, transportation
caused over half of the carbon
monoxide, over a third of the
nitrogen oxide and almost a quarter
of
the
hydrocarbons
in
the
atmosphere by 2006.

OUR PROBLEM: AIR POLLUTION

Black Smoke
Sometimes a vehicle will begin to emit a smoke
that is different from the normal combustion. This
smoke is a byproduct of incomplete combustion,
which can increase the quantity of toxic
chemicals discharged by the vehicle into the
atmosphere. It can have a deleterious effect on
health, especially if the person is predisposed to
respiratory issues.

OUR PROBLEM: AIR

POLLUTION

Despite the passage of this law, pollution levels remain in

excess of the Department of Environment and Natural
Resources (DENR) threshold of 90 micrograms of pollutants
per cubic meter.

In 2009, the stretch of EDSA

alone registered the dirtiest air
with 282 micrograms per cubic
meter, followed by Valenzuela
City with 156 micrograms and
the National Printing Office area
in Quezon City with 144
micrograms. Pollutants include
sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen

OUR PROBLEM: AIR POLLUTION

How Vehicles Pollute the Air
When gasoline or diesel does not fully
combust, it becomes what we know as
vehicle emissions. But gas is not the only
culprit that contributes to clouding our air.
Emission controls, the design of your
engine, and the improper care of your car
can add to the problem. The result is a
combination of pollutants such as carbon
monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons,
nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and
dangerous organic compounds.

OUR 2ND PROBLEM: FUEL

COST

As of MARCH, 2012 net increase for gasoline and diesel

stood at P5.85 a liter, and P3.20 a liter, respectively.
As of AUGUST 20, 2012, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp.
and Total Philippines have jacked up raised prices of
premium gasoline by P1.80 per liter, regular gasoline by
P1.70 a liter effective Monday morning, while independent
player Eastern Petroleum also implemented a similar price
hike effective (Tuesday). Other oil companies are expected
to follow suit, but have not issued their respective
advisories as of press time.
