Fault Detection

and Diagnostics
DR. VISHAL GARG

Work Done till Last Evaluation

1) Literature Review Read and Understood papers and reviews on Fault
Detection and Diagnostics.
2) Understanding of the project
3) Submitted a Tutorial on Basic Understanding of Fault Detection.
4) Understanding and learning of some basic libraries of Dymola Electrical,
Fluid and some more.
5) In phase II, we have modelled some basic models to learn Dymola, like
Bouncing Ball, Simple DC Motor, Pendulum.

Work done in Phase-III

1) Simple Dc Motor Model
2) Simple Three Tank System
3) Survey to detect frequency of fault detection in college dealing with faults
in
1) Fan Faults
2) Geyser Faults
3) Water Cooler Faults
4) Come upon an idea recently about fault detection in fans with respect to their
speed.
By tracking their current waveform and if any abrupt changes are there then making
the system output high for the fault detected and vice versa.
Extension Can be extended to Temp. Related Faults by using temp. sensor.

Faults in Fans

Geysers Faults
Column2

Water Coolers Faults

Calculations
1) For Calculating Faults in Fans, we have taken the reference from Complaint
Register in OBH for Electric Faults.
Number of Samples Taken = 210(approx.)
Number of faults relating to fan = 150(approx.)
Then normalizing it with reference to 100
Which leads to 70 fan relating faults per 100 faults in OBH.
2) Water Cooler Calculation is done by random checking the water
Coolers in OBH.
Number of water coolers = 22
# Water coolers working faulty (parameters flow of water coming
Through tap, Purification of water and cooling of water) = 7-8

Faults in air conditioners

The air conditioner is not running but
some control lights are on

Internal fault in the air conditioner or no

power.

Indoor fan runs but the air coming out is

not cool (on cooling) or warm (on
heating)

Thermostat not calling for cooling or

heating. Outdoor fan not running

Compressor runs excessively and the

room is too cold in summer or too hot in
winter

Thermostat set too high or low

Compressor runs excessively but can't

bring the room to a comfortable
temperature (ie room too hot in summer
or too cold in winter)

Air conditioner too small.

High ceilings and a high level return
causing the hot air to remain at ceiling
level while you are cold

Faults in Fans
Faults

Causes

The fan suddenly stops working or

on installation does not work.

A broken switch or capacitor.

Speed Failures

A capacitor fault or failure.

The fan makes a humming noise

If the noise is more like a buzz then it

could be a capacitor that has failedor
screw tightening issue.
