CONSEQUENSES OF

KALABAGH DAM
Kalabagh Dam is not a question but
is an answer to our three problems,
namely,
shortage of water,
shortage of electricity and
devastating effects of floods

CONSEQUENSES IF BUILT
Replacing storage lost estimated about 3 MAF by
the year 2000
Regulation and control of high flood peaks in the
Indus to enable provision of perennial tube well
irrigation to the rive rain area in Sindh
Generating a large chunk of hydro-power for
meeting the growing demand of agricultural,
industrial and domestic consumers through low
cost option.
Reducing dependence on imported fuels.
Creating employment for 30,000 persons during
construction and significant numbers after
commissioning

CONSEQUENSES IF BUILT
POWER

Kalabagh with its installed capacity of 2400

MW (ultimate 3600 M)
In an average year, 11413 million kilowatts
hours (MKWhs) of electricity would be
generated
The energy generated at Kalabagh would be
equivalent to 20 million barrels of oil per
year.

CONSEQUENSES IF BUILT
FLOOD ALLEVIATION

Kalabagh would reduce the frequency and

severity of flooding along the Indus
For the rive rain areas lower down in
Sindh, it would enable conversation of the
existing Sailaba areas to the year round
tube well irrigation.
Benefits of Kalabagh Dam would be
around Rs. 25 billion per annum

CONSEQUENCES IF NOT
BUILT
Loss of storage capacity of the on-line reservoir
due to sedimentation would result in shortage
of committed irrigation supplies causing serious
drop even in existing agriculture production.
In its absence it would give rise to bitter interprovincial
disputes
and
recriminations
particularly in a dry water year.
Annual import of fuel for thermal generation,
including
augmentation
of
transportation
infrastructure, would be an additional burden to
the economy.

CONSEQUENCES IF NOT
BUILT
Recently, Federal Government has entered
into agreements with international private
sector to install over manyof thermal
power over next 2-3 years. Though it may
help in overcoming the load-shedding, the
power cost will increase substantially
Growth of domestic industrial and
agriculture sectors would be impended
due to high power costs

IMPACT N NATIONAL
INTEGRITY
KPK one of the challengers, fears
inundation at her fertile lands, waterlogging and salinity, and inhumane
rehabilitation of the inhabitants of
Kalabagh. It is widely held that under
extreme conditions, the dam could
overflow and flood NWFP severely.
Besides that, the storage of water in
the dam could avert drainage water
which will result into water-logging
