Objective
To Improve The Efficiency Of
Devices by Reducing
Switching Loss

The Problem
The switching Devices are turned
on and off at the load current with
a high di/dt value.
This high voltage stress leads to
switching power loss which is a
major contributor to the system
loss.

Why Resonant Converter

The switching losses can be
removed or minimized if the
switching devices are turned on
and off when the voltage or current
across a device becomes zero.
The voltage & current are forced to
pass through zero crossing by
creating an LC resonant circuit.

Why LLC
Resonant
Converter?

Problem With Series Resonant

Converter-

For the maximum efficiency, the

circuit needs to operate with its
switching frequency at the
resonant frequency.
But, for a continuous output
voltage, the switching for a series
resonant converter needs to be
above the resonant frequency.
Due to this, it has a limit on how
far the operating frequency can
be varied.

Problem With Parallel Resonant

ConverterSince the load is in parallel with
the resonant capacitor, even at
no load condition, the input will
still see a pretty small impedance
of the series resonant tank. This
will induce pretty high circulating
energy even when the load is
zero.
This leads to it having a very high
turn off current at high input
voltage condition.

Problem With Series-Parallel

Resonant ConverterThe conduction loss and switching
loss will increase at high input
voltage.

LLC Resonant
Converter
This type of circuit has two
resonant frequencies. One is
determined by the resonant
components Lr and Cr. The
other one is determined by Lm,
Cr and load condition.
This circuit makes sure that the
switching occurs within ZVS
region. This is because, in the
case of ZCS, the capacitive
turn-on loss increases with the
switching frequency, resulting
in high current stress leading to
conduction loss.

The designed operating regions

are region 1 and region 2.
Region 3 is ZCS region. The
converter should be prevented
from entering region 3.

Design Of Circuit
The parameters needed to be designed are:
Transformer turns ratio: n
Series resonant inductor: Lr
Resonant capacitor: Cr
Resonant inductor ratio: Lm/Lr
The Speculated specifications for the design are Input voltage range: 300 V to 400 V, normal operating region (360-400 V)
Output voltage: 50 V
Maximum load: 2.5 Ohm
Maximum switching frequency: 200 kHz

Loss Comparison
Use of the Resonant Converter should be able to
increase the efficiency by at least 3%.
For this part, the loss of LLC resonant converter is
compared with Asymmetrical Half Bridge PWM
Converter.
Comparison will be based on simulations and
calculations. All converters are designed with same
Specifications.
