Introduction
Blu-ray Disc (also known as Blu-ray or
BD) is a new optical disc storage media
format.
Its main uses are high-definition video
and data storage. The disc has the same
dimensions as a standard DVD or CD.

The Name
The Blu-ray name is a combination of
blue, for the color of the laser that
is used for reading data and ray for
optical ray.
The e in blue was purposefully left
off, according to the manufacturers,
because an everyday word cannot be
a trademark.

Features Of BD

The sleek design helps in skipping from any

part of the disc to the other.
Multiple programs like using the same disc for
watching a video as well as recording on it can
be done at the same time.
Watch HD in its maximum quality with very
little loss.
The programs present on the disc can be reordered in any way you like.
Use of subtitles is possible for movies.

History

3rd GENERATION:

Blu-ray disc (BD): --- 25/50 GB

Next generation optical disc format.

Developed by blu-ray disc association (which
includes Apple, Hitachi, HP, LG, Panasonic,
Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony)
Wavelength of laser which reads data: 405 nm
Color of laser: Blue-violet which was
developed by
SHUJI NAKAMURA
at NICHIA CORPORATION

Format Of BD
It comes in four different formats:
BD-ROM (read only) : for reading
recorded content.

BD-R (recordable) : for PC data storage.

BD-RW (rewritable) : for PC data

storage.

BD-RE (rewritable) : for HDTV (high

definition television) recording.

Types Of BD
Single Layer :
- Can hold data up to 25/27 GB that
means 2 hrs of HD video or about 13
hrs of standard video.
Double Layer :
- Can hold data up to 50 GB that
means 4.5 hrs of HD video or more
than 20 hrs of standard video.

Working of Blu-ray
Discs store digitally Disc
encoded video

and audio
Information in pits , spiral grooves
that run from
the center of the disc
to its edges .
A laser reads the other side of
these pits
to play the movie or program
that is
stored on the disc.
The more data that is contained on a
disc, the
smaller and more closely packed
the pits must be.

The smaller beam focuses more precisely,

enabling it to read information recorded in pits
that are not only 0.15 microns long this is more
than twice as small as the pits on a DVD.

Blu-ray Player

Blu-ray players are the digital video

players that play Blu-ray discs.
Blu-ray players are compatible with
standard DVDs so, you can play all your
disks on it and not have to use to different
players.

VIDEO:
Blu-ray players are widely regarded as producing
superior image quality to DVD players. Blu-ray players
are able to play movies and other videos at the highest
possible resolution, meaning you get to enjoy the best
image available to you on your home television.

AUDIO:
Blu-ray players create a more detailed and clear sound
for viewers than DVD players. More soundtrack
formats are available for Blu-ray technology.

Blu-ray s Durability
Advantage

Various hard coating technologies make Blu

ray disc most durable and family -friendly .
Hard-coating technology provides resistance
to:
- Finger prints
- Marks
- Scratches
- Dust
Much more ROBUST than todays
polycarbonate-based CD/DVDs (and HD
DVDs)

Blu-rays Density
Advantage

Higher density
enables better
data seek times.
Shorter to travel
for same amount
of data results in
faster data seek.
Better for random
access of data.

On Guard
Blu-ray discs are better armed
than current DVDs. They come
equipped with a secure encryption
system a unique ID that protects
against video piracy and copyright
infringement.

Disadvantages

Blue Ray Discs are more expensive

than conventional DVDs.
Blu-ray movie titles cost more than
DVD titles and there are only a few
titles for Blu-ray.
Blu-ray is hard to produce than DVD.
Blu-Ray uses hardware which may
be replaced with flash memory.

Conclusion

Blu-ray is a digital media format for

optical disks that uses blue laser
diode due to its narrow focus point.
Blu-ray has become the industrys
new preferred format over HD DVD.
Businesses will be able to use Bluray drives in computer and laptops
for more data storage and backup.

The future is Blu-ray
