BIOCHEMISTRY

Biochemistry is a branch of science that

seeks
to
describe
the
structure,
organization and functions of living matter
in molecular terms.
STUDY OF THE STRUCTURE,
COMPOSITION, AND CHEMICAL
REACTIONS OF SUBSTANCES IN LIVING
SYSTEMS

IT TRIES TO EXPLAIN LIFE IN TERMS OF BIO

Principle Areas of Biochemistry

Structure and function of biological
macromolecules
Metabolism anabolic and catabolic
processes.
Molecular understanding How life is
replicated. Regulation of bioprocess

Microorganisms as production factory

Microorganisms in the process of self
replication, produce numerous complex
macromolecules from about 100 different
monomer units.
To achieve this a bacterial cell uses well
over 1000 different enzymes and a
eukaryotic cell may employ twice as many.

Products of Microbial Technology

Microorganisms are used in industrial settings to

produce
many

important

chemicals,

antibiotics,

organic

compounds,
and pharmaceuticals.
Using

living

organisms

as

chemical

synthesis factories reduces many of the risks and

polluting

raw

materials to be replaced by less expensive processes.

The by-products of biosynthetic reactions are

usually less toxic and hazardous than those of
industrial chemical reactions.

Microbes and Commercial biochemical products

Metabolites:
Microbial cell have two types of metabolites:
Primary metabolites, which are produced during the
organisms growth phase, these Compounds are essential to
an organisms metabolism and its end products.
Secondary metabolites, are not essential to cell growth or
function and are characteristically produced quite late in the
growth cycle and are usually derived from primary
metabolites or the intermediates of primary metabolites.
Enzymes:
Lipase, Lactase, Protease, Amylase, Pectinase
All enzymes used for Genetic Engineering
Antibiotics:
Pencilline the first one discovered by alexander fleming
during world warII
And so many antibiotics
