Human health risk assessment of heavy

metals via consumption of contaminated


vegetables collected from different irrigation
sources in Lahore, Pakistan

Introduction
Worlds urban communities are increasing faster than
global population.
Urban developments caused momentous alteration to
the environment by increasing waste material
accumulation through anthropogenic activities .
Urban expansion is promoting a concern for farmers to
use contaminated land for food crops production.
Wastewater irrigation to increase yield of food crops in
principal source of contamination in urban agricultural
lands.

Vegetables grown on contaminated land may
accumulate toxic metals.
In Lahore metropolitan area 1121 unplanned
industries are sited , which include 642 steel factories,
36 textile industries and 295 other industries like
leather tanneries.
These industries discharge their wastewater in twelve
drainage areas of the city managed by Water and
sanitation authority (WASA ).

Materials and methods


Agricultural land to the north and east of Lahore city along
river Ravi and Jallo town was selected as the study area.
Two main zones were selected on basis of industrial waste
water irrigation and ground water irrigation.

Discussions
Oxidation state, heavy metal form and phase strongly
influence the bioavailability of heavy metals.
Heavy metal concentration in groundwater was in
range of Indian permissible limits while there was
higher concentration in wastewater compared with
Indian permissible limits.
Leafy vegetables have a higher concentration of
heavy metals than those of bulbs and tuber
vegetables.

Conclusion

Research revealed that the leafy vegetables have a


higher capability to accumulate the heavy metals
from soil compared with he others (tuber/bulbs, etc.)
It is suggested that an urgent attention is
required for the implementation of proper
means to monitor and regulate the
industrial and municipal effluents.
