Warm-up (4 min)
In my opinion, the judgment this day rendered will, in
time, prove to be quite as pernicious (evil) as the decision
made by this tribunal in the Dred Scott Case (slaves were
property). It was adjudged in that case that the
descendants of Africans who were imported into this
country and sold as slaves were not included nor intended
to be included under the word citizens in the Constitution,
and could not claim any of the rights provided for
citizens of the U.S. Dissenting vote, Plessey v. Ferguson.
What implications do you think this had on the United States

in the late 1800s and early 1900s? Explain / Justify

How does this relate to the Civil Rights Movement of the mid
1900s? Explain / Justify

CHALLENGE! What do you think it means to be on

the wrong side of history? In your mind, was the
person above on the right or wrong side of history?

Plessys
Impacts
The decision in Plessy v. Ferguson
established separate facilities, but
were clearly not equal
Example: Separate schools meant
that many Blacks received lower
funding and poorer quality education.

Discrimination/Segregation in public schools and

colleges

This forced many African Americans to receive

lower paying jobs and locked them into the
lower or lower-middle class
Began a cycle of racial inequality.
