2. Bulawayo Progress Report

45+ staff now have hands-on GIS
skills and are connected to the
fileserver.
GIS training held every Thursday
afternoon.
150+ GIS datasets available online.
64,000 stands (parcels) mapped (~43%
of the city).
Pilot area (6,500 stands) mapping 90%
complete.
Water meters being mapped with
smartphones.
GIS SOP manual prepared (85+ pages).

6. Small Town GIS Options

a) Bulawayo option:

IT conditions not the same as at the smaller towns,

so could not adopt the networked approach to a
central fileserver, with all staff directly connected to
the GIS from their office desktops.

b) Do nothing option:

Could continue to supply Councils with engineering

plans prepared by consultants but not sustainable
and no capacity building occurring.

c) GIS-Lite option:

Gweru, Norton, Chinhoyi, Kariba and Kadoma.

Based around the Council drafting officer (+1)
becoming the GIS/ mapping person for the Council.
Would be supplied with ArcGIS (Basic) software and
desktop computer.
ArcGIS training to be provided (available in Harare).
All color printing to be outsourced as required (A0
= $10)
