Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle
and use them to solve problems; give an informal derivation of
the relationship between the circumference and area of a
circle.
What is the area of a circle with a radius of 5?
This is a simple example following this standard, but a better
question will require more than just knowledge and application of
formulas, it will make students analyze the relationship between
the two. Helping students to explain math, not just memorize
the formula.
Jackson explains to his classmate that doubling the
circumference of a circle results in the doubling of the
circles area. Is Jackson correct? Use the formulas for area
and circumference to justify your answer.
This leads to higher-order thinking

Technology utilization
The plural of abacus is abaci? Who cares?
Whats a slide rule? Again, who cares?

Higher-order thinking
While lower-order thinking is the mastering
of facts or completing assignments by
following steps, higher-order thinking
requires the student to master decisionmaking, prioritizing, strategizing and
collaborative problem solving in order to
succeed (Farr, S., Kamras, J., & Kopp, W.
2010, p. 53)
Higher-order thinking leads to better
understandings of what is being taught and
longer retention
