ABSTRACT
• Role of reactive power.
• Need for the reactive power compensation.
• Types of compensation of reactive power mainly by
the use of capacitor banks.
• Capacitor banks installed at various substations both
at 220KV level and 132KV level for compensation.
• The data on failures pertaining to the capacitors banks
which occurred at various EHT substations.
• Functioning, failures occurred and the availability
of the capacitor bank at substations.

INTRODUCTION:

• Reactive Power appears in every AC power system .

• Many loads consume active and reactive power.
• Electric network itself consumes and produces reactive
power.
• Transmission and distribution of electric power
involves reactive power losses.
CONT..,
• There is a strong coupling between the reactive power
balance of a power system and the voltages.

• If the balance is not proper, unacceptable voltages

prevail.

• Excess reactive power means High Voltages.

• Deficit reactive power means Low Voltages.

• Reactive power imbalance, in some cases influences

the power system stability.
NEED FOR COMPENSATION
• To maintain efficient transmission and
distribution.
• Reactive power imbalance, in some cases
influences the power system stability.
• Transfer of reactive power means a higher
current and thereby higher losses and higher
thermal loading. The latter may influence the
ratings of transformers and cables.
TYPES OF COMPENSATION
• Shunt compensation
• Series compensation

• Latest Technology
• SVC
• Thyristor controlled swtiches
INSTALLATION OF CAPACITOR BANKS

Consideration to be given to:

• Fire hazard
• Explosive hazard
• Ambient temperature
• Ventilation of heat
• Lightning arresters and grounding to be taken care .

COMMISSIONING OF CAPACITOR
BANKS
• Continuous current rating of all the associated
equipment should be 1.43 times the normal current for
HT capacitors.

PROTECTION
• Protection generally consists of
• Fuse Protection
• System Protection by overcurrent relays
• Bank Protection by relays
ADVANTAGES
• Power factor correction
• Feeder-Loss Reduction
• Release of System capacity
• Voltage- Stabilization/Regulation
• Efficient Power Utilization
• Power Quality Enhancement
• Power Harmonic Filtering
ANALYSIS OF CASE STUDY
CONCLUSION
• Attempts to make the power factor as close as
to unity.
• Proper analysis design and implementation of
the capacitor banks.
• Appropriate mounting and protecting devices
will not only reduce the bill charges but also
make the profit on long term.
FUTURE SCOPE
• The electricity consumption depends upon the
infrastructure loads.
• Hyderabad area is going to consume more
loads in future.
• Practical implementation of the capacitor
placement technique requires further cost-
benefit analysis which in turns depends on the
costs of capacitor bank and energy saving.
