INTRODUCTION TO

BARRAGE

What is Barrage
Barrage is a hydraulic structure built across the
river for diversion of water.
Barrage is gated weir
Head works is a hydraulic structure built parallel
to the flow of river

Design of Barrage
Different terms are used while designing hydraulic structure of
the barrage, some of which are discussed
Afflux
River bed level
High flood level
Velocity head
Crest
Lowest Water level

Afflux
This rise in water level on the upstream is called afflux,
mostly occure at high flood season.
Crest
Crest is that point where the gates of barrage rest

Design Procedure
First of all gather all previous data regarding to barrage
design like max discharge, min discharge, river bed
level , pond level, high flood level etc
After finding the related data, find out the wetted
perimeter by using the equation Pw=2.67sqrt max
discharge
After finding the wetted perimeter calculate the width of
barrage by multiplying the wetted perimeter to laceys
looseness factor generally it is taken as 0.9-1.9

After finding out the width of barrage decide the number

of bays provided in barrage depending upon the width of
barrage also provide the fish ladder and divide wall
Here we use 36 bays@50
33 piers@6
2 divide walls
1 fish ladder
Piers are also provided at a suitable distances
After the selection of bays calculate the amount of
discharge for abutments as well over the crest.
Calculate the Laceyss silt factor using the relation
S=(1/1844)*(f^5/3/Qmax)^1/6

Fixation of Crest Level

Assume the suitable crest level as wel afflux for the

barrage. These are experimental based assumptions
Here we use the crest level is 5 and the assumed afflux is
2

Different parameters like scour depth ,h0,V0,H0,E0 & E1 are

to be find using following formula
H0=R-P

Where R=scour dept

P is the crest level( suitable assumed)
V0=Qabu/R
h0=V0^2/2*g
E0=H0+h0
E1=D0+h0+afflux
Where D0 is the level difference of U/s level to River bed level.

Max d/s Water Level

Using the Curve for barrage stage-discharge find out the
water level at downstream , compute the discharge for
normal, retrogressed and accreted state kept in mind
that discharge will be in million cusec.
Same as like above use Gibsons curve for discharge
coefficient
Both the graphs shown in next slide

By using the Gibsons curve choose the suitable value of

C and find the discharge , but the discharge find by
Gibsons curve is more than the max discharge.

Design of Undersluices
Under sluices are that part of barrage used for silt
control these are installed at upstream of barrage with
lower crest level.
The crest of the under-under sluice portion of the weir is
kept at a lower level (1 ~ 1.5 m) than the crest of the
normal portion of the weir.

Bays of Undersluices
Assume the no of bays of under sluices also assume the
discharge of under sluices 120% of main weir.
Here we assume 30 bays@6
Calculate the amount of discharge passing through
under sluices and find the %age of water pass through it
by dividing the under sluice discharge to the max
discharge.
Design results and other parameters like tables are
given in the excel sheet.

Discharge for different states

For normal state we take different discharge like
300000,190000&100000 cusec.
For 100000 cusec some conditions not satisfies in
normal state curve
For retrogressed state only the 300000 cusec discharge
will satisfy
For accreted state not only the single discharge will
satisfy
Details are given in the next slide
