Micom Relay LED Description

Fixed leds

Programmable leds

All Micom relays have four fixed leds and 4, 8 or 12

programmable leds, depending on the model used

Alarm & Warning LEDs

Two types of alarm and warning messages:
1. Alarm messages generated by the
electrical power network.
If one or several messages are NOT READ and NOT
ACKNOWLEDGED, the ALARM LED 2 flashes.
If all the messages have been READ but NOT
ACKNOWLEDGED, the ALARM LED 2 lights up
continuously.

2. Warning messages caused by hardware

or software faults from the relay.
Not possible to acknowledge and clear,
unless the cause of the hardware or
software failure has been removed.
lights up continuously for major fault: RL0
operates, no protection
Flashes for minor fault eg comms fail;
protection still available

Relay Identification Information

Under the top cover is the information regarding the relay:

A label identifies the relay according to its model and serial
number.
These numbers must be referred to in all requests made to
Alstom,
It defines the relay in a way that is unique to the relay.
Information about the relays auxiliary supply is printed on this
label too.

MiCOM Px2x & Px4x Password

A password is required to change the relay settings and configuration

Default is AAAA the user can change it to his own combination of
four characters.
Contact Actom to obtain a bypass if a changed password is lost.

Regarding P12x and P521 relays:

The programming mode is displayed with the letter P on the LC

No rear or front port remote comms will be successful when the r

is in password mode.

Password mode is active for five minutes after the last keypad ac

Relay Maintenance

Relay Maintenance

MiCOM relays are self-supervising; require less

maintenance than earlier designs of relays.
Most problems will result in an alarm, (watchdog),
so that remedial action can be taken.
However, some periodic tests should be done to
ensure that the relay is functioning correctly and
the external wiring is intact.

Measurement accuracy
If the power system is energized, the values
measured by the relay can be compared with
known system values, to check that they are in the
approximate range that is expected.
If they are, then the analogue/digital conversion
and calculations are being performed correctly by
the relay.
Alternatively, secondary injection (recommended)
can be done to prove the calibration accuracy is
being maintained.
Thermal withstand of both phase and earth current
inputs:
100 In - 1 s
40 In - 2 s
4 In
- Continuous (In = Inominal, 1 or 5 amp)

Replacing the Px2x Relay

The

relay can be withdrawn from its case while on load.

all CT inputs are automatically shorted out
no tripping order is generated,
the watchdog relay drops out,
the RS485 link is not interrupted.

Insert a 3mm screwdriver into the hole situated under

the upper hinged cover above the LCD and turn the
lock pin 90 to the left:

System Fault Analysis

Fault Analysis

The relays have integral measurements for

analysis of system disturbances:
Event
Fault
Disturbance recording

Event Records
The relay records and time tags events, to a
resolution of 1ms, and stores them in its memory.
An event may be a:

change of state of a control input or output relay,

an alarm condition,
setting change,
protection element starts and trips

Px2x stores 75, the oldest event will be

overwritten by the new one.
The event records are available for viewing either
via the frontplate LCD, the RS232 front
communication port with Micom Studio, or
remotely, via the rear communications ports

Fault Records
Fault records are viewed on the LCD screen
These records contains information on system
disturbances: time, measurements etc.
Each time a fault record is generated, an event is
also created
The fault measurements in the fault record are
given at the time of the protection start it is a
snapshot of the fault values at the time of fault
inception and can be different from the maximum
fault quantities during the fault duration

Disturbance Recorder

A disturbance record is extracted with Micom

Studio from the communication ports
It is viewed with Wavewin or E-view on a computer
It consists of analogue and digital data channels
The relevant CT and VT ratios for the analogue
channels are also extracted to enable scaling to
primary quantities.
The pre and post fault recording times are
programmable in the relays
