The Various Resources on Earth

Natural resources are resources that are

provided by nature.

Man, animals and plants need food,

water, air and shelter in order to survive
or to sustain life. They get their needs
from Earths resources.

Natural resources can be classified as:

Living natural
resources

Non-living natural
resources

Living things such as

plants and animals.
Examples: herbs,
woods, cotton, milk,
meat, cooking oil,
fruits, vegetables and
so on.

Examples: Water,
air, soil, minerals,
fossil fuels, nonmetals and so on.

Water
Resources

Uses

1. 70% of Earths
surface is made up
of water.
2. The sources of
water are
________,
_______, ______,
________,
________,
___________.

needed for transportation of nutrients

and oxygen in plants and animals
needed by green plants to make food
during photosynthesis
needed to remove wastes from our
body
needed for drinking, cleaning and
bathing

Air
Resources

Uses

1. A layer of air known as the

atmosphere surrounds the
Earth.
2. Air contains oxygen,
carbon dioxide, nitrogen,
inert gases and water
vapour.

oxygen is needed for

respiration in all living
organisms
carbon dioxide is used to
make food during
photosynthesis
oxygen helps in burning

Soil
Resources

Uses

1. Soil is the topmost layer

of the Earths crust.
2. Soil is the mixture of
sand particles, clay,
minerals, water, air,
organisms and organic
matter. Organic matter
includes ___________,
______________ and
________________.

farming, mining and building

construction
necessary for the support and
growth of plants
supplies plants with minerals
and water
habitat for some organisms,
such as earthworms and ants
has resources that are
necessary for supporting life

Habitat for living organisms

Provide for farming and agriculture

Soil

provide and minerals

Minerals
Resources

Uses

1. Minerals are elements

or compounds which
occur in the Earths
crust naturally.
2. Minerals can be found
on land and in seas or
oceans

required by our body for our

health
required by plants for growth
useful as raw materials for various
industries like copper (electrical
cables and wires), iron (steel, for
construction of buildings, ships,
bridges, vehicles and others),
aluminium (kitchen utensils, drink
cans, body of aeroplanes and
electrical cables)

- Cookware and cable

Iron

- Vehicles , ships and bridges

Aluminium

- Drink can and other households

Fossil fuels
Resources

Uses

1. Fossil fuels consist of

__________, ______ and
_____________.
2. Fossil fuels are formed
from partially decayed
living things that died
millions of years ago.
3. Coal and natural gas can
be used directly after
mining.
4. Petroleum needs to be
separated by a process
fractional distillation.

sources of energy for vehicles,

power stations to generate
energy, machinery in factories
provide heat and light energy

wool)
as a companion or pet (examples: dogs and
cats)
as a labour (examples: elephants and
buffalo)
as food (examples: fish, meat, milk and
grains)

(examples: wood, palm leaf, timber,
mangrove wood and rattan)
