HSV300 controller features

Two 4Gb/s Fibre Channel fabric host ports

Auto-negotiate to support both 2Gb/s and 4Gb/s SANs

Two 4Gb/s FC-AL device ports

Redundant pair
Data load/performance balanced across the pair
Support for up to 96 drives
Management Module (MM) allows for web-based OCP and

array-based management (ABM) use

Mirroring through the backplane, not through external ports
Full redundancy

Two interconnected controllers ensures that a single

controller (or power supply) failure does not disable the
system
Data redundancy includes one loop A and one loop B data
path

HSV300-S controller description and

features
Same description and features as HSV300 controllers
except
Each of the two controllers has an embedded SAN switch
Brocade 5410
Fabric OS 6.1.0_8e or later
10-ports B-series switch
Two of the 10 ports for hosts
Shipped with four 4Gb SFPs, but will support 8Gb SFPs

Cache battery pack

Purpose: hold up write cache data

during a power outage

Lithium-ion batteries (previous

generation uses lead acid)

One pack required per controller,

containing
Three batteries (4.2V)
Total of six cells (two cells form a battery)
Provide power to the cache memory

DIMMs
When both assemblies are fully charged
Guarantees power to the DIMMs for 96
hours (HUT)
Can really do 260+ hours
Batteries are firmware upgradeable
Most firmware is located in the pack

Fan description and functionality

Two controllers and two fans in the same enclosure
Each controller controls one fan
If one controller is missing, the other controller controls
both fans
Each controller measures its temperature, and also

measures the temperature of the other controller

Fans have trap doors to stop air flow for temperature
control
Fans run at three speeds, similar to the HSV200-B
The speeds are based on temperature ranges

Controller power switch

Controller enclosure power switch is located on a
small module on the back of the enclosure
HSV4x0 also uses this design, but has different

functionality

The power switch is a standby/on switch

Momentary on, hall-effect-type switch, which

controls the On and Standby states

If current power state is Standby, switch must be
pushed for a minimum of 1 second, then released for
the power state to change from Standby to On
If current power state is On, the switch must be
pushed for a minimum of 4 seconds, then released
for the power state to change from On to Standby

Power supply
Power supplies

have no
intelligence, that
is, there are no
PICs
Looks and is
almost the same
as power supplies
used in several
servers
Not compatible
with other
servers
Use correct
spare parts only

EVA4400 Management Module

EVA4400 only
Located in the HSV300 or HSV300-S controller enclosure
Two essential environments

Operating environment and hardware platform

Web-based OCP (WOCP)
Layered application
Replaces the OCP of other generations
Available as platform for Command View EVA

U4879S L.01 2011 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.

WOCP description
WOCP is primary interface to MM to determine if
system is generally accessible. The WOCP
replaces the physical OCP from the other models,
with similar functionality.
Only way that the software can be updated (other

than manufacturing)
System has mechanism to restart processes if they
crash for any reason

Logon behavior
To browse to the WOCP on the MM, you use

https://<IP address>:2373
To browse to Command View EVA (if installed) on the
same module as above, you use https://<IP
address>:2372

Power-down or restart system
U4879S L.01 2011 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.

Storage system startup procedure

Verify that fabric switches connected to controllers

are powered up and fully booted.

Power indicator on each switch should be on.

If powering on SAN switches, let them complete boot.
Power-up the circuit breaker on each rack PDU to

power up the drive shelves.

Verify that all drive enclosures are operating.

Status and power indicators should be on (solid green
LED).
Power-on controller enclosure to power-on both

controllers.
After system starts, connect to WOCP to verify
display of storage system name and WWN.
Start Command View EVA and verify connection to
the storage system and its status.

Configuring the embedded switch

Embedded switches in HSV300-S controller have

default IP addresses.
May not be visible to network.
Configuration changes must be made to both switches.
Connect a cable from the Ethernet port of each

switch to a laptop or PC and supply valid addresses.

Use a Cat 5e or greater cable.
Alternatively, connect using the console port and
cable.
Use same IP range as embedded switch.
Details are in HP StorageWorks 4400 Enterprise

Virtual Array Installation Guide.
