INTAKES OF

WATER

INTAKES

is a process to extract
and deliver water to the users
economically with an acceptably low
impact
on
the
environment.
Whenever the water is withdrawn
from a surface source such as lake or
river or reservoir.

RAETH METHOD
In

ancient times water was

exteracted with ox and cow
And in some villages peasants are
now also stick to this method.

Why we need intakes structures?

Function of Intakes structure is to
safely withdraw water from the
source and then to discharge into the
withdrawal conduit through which it
flows up to the water treatment
plant.

Factors Affecting

Water Availability
Bathymetry
Sediment Transport
Environmental Regulation
Climatic Conditions
Constructability
Operation and Maintenance

Most
important
factor
is
the
availability of water to meet the
required demand without creating an
environmentally
and
physically
adverse effect on the water body.
This is particularly important for fresh
water supply

Simple submerged intake

A simple submerged intake structures consists of simple

concrete block or a rock filled timber crib supporting the
starting end of the withdrawal pipes. The withdrawal pipes
are generally taken up to the sump well at shore, from
where, the water is lifted by Lumps.
The intake opening generally covered by screen so as to
prevent the entry of debris, ice, etc. in to the withdrawal
conduit
Such intake structures should be placed in streams or in
lakes at a place where they may not get buried under
sediment and where there are deep waters. These are
widely used Intakes for small water supply projects drawing
water from streams are lakes having relatively little change
in water surface elevation throughout the year.

There are two major types of intake towers:

Wet Intake tower
Dry intake towers
2. I. Wet Intake Towers

The withdrawal may be taken directly to the treatment

Gates are usually provided on the shaft, so as to

control the flow water.

The water coming out of the withdrawal conduit may

be taken to pump house for lift.

Wet intake tower

Dry Intakes Towers

In a dry intake tower, the water is

directly drawn into the withdrawal
conduit through the gated entry
ports.

Dry intake tower

Medium sized well type of River Intake Structures

It consist of chamber ,circular or

rectangular made of brick work
R.c.c or stone masonary. It is
connected to the sump well. This
will facilitate the inspection and
repairs.

River intake when channel leads to sump well

It is very useful to extract water when the

water level is very low

Canal Intake Structures

In

case of canals generally water enters the chamber

through an inlet pipe, covered with a fine screen.

The water coming out of the chamber through the

outlet conduit may be taken to the sump well or city,
as desired.

The entry of water in the intake well takes through a

coarse screen

The flow velocity through the outlet conduit is

generally kept at about 1.5 m/sec

WATER TAKES PLACE.

Current Extraction Rates Not Sustainable

"We don't know the absolute volume of water in the
Northern Indian .The region has become dependent
on irrigation to maximize agricultural productivity, so
we could be looking at more than a water crisis."
The loss is particularly alarming because it occurred
when there were no unusual trends in rainfall. In fact,
rainfall was slightly above normal for the period.
