What is the difference
st
between the 1 world
countries and the 3rd
world countries like the
Philippines?

Some say:
1. It must be the age
2. Its the natural resources
3. Its the intelligence
4. Its the race or color
5. Its the technology

What is the
difference then?

The difference is the

attitude of the people,
framed along the
years by the education
& the culture.

The Filipino ATTITUDE:

Tips on
Leadership and
Academic Role
Management
By G.L. John Clavel Haro

#1. Know thyself

Know who you are.

Know what you can do.
Know your strengths.
Know your weaknesses.
Know everything about you and
things that may affect you and your
performance as a student leader.

You must be true to yourself. Strong

enough to be true to yourself.
Brave enough to be strong enough
to be true to yourself. Wise enough
to be brave enough to be strong
enough to shape yourself from
what you actually are.
Sylvia Ashton Warner

#2. Set a vision/goal

What does VISION mean?
a desired outcome
an ideal future state
PERSONAL VISION is
the image or picture of the IDEAL FUTURE state

one imagines for oneself

it is the BEST POSSIBLE YOU
it is based on the idea that everything is created twice
(e.g. a blueprint is usually made before a structure is built)

PERSONAL VISION = Imagination + conscience

Vision without action is

merely a dream. Action
without vision just passes
the time. Vision with action
can change the world.
Joel Barker

#3. Set your priorities

What is important to you?
What will bring you to your vision?
What will make you happy?

#4. Manage your time

Be on time.
Keep a planner.
Manage your time basing on your
priorities.
When its work, you work. When its
rest, you rest.

#5. Be organized

#6. Enable breakthrough

thinking

Higher Order
Thinking Skills
Breakthrough
Thinking
(kai-ka-ku)

Breakthrough Thinking
A problem cannot be solved at the level of thinking at
which it was created, said Einstein.
The new level of thinking required to solve a problem can
be called breakthrough thinking.
For example, connect the following 9 circles using only 5
connected straight lines without lifting your pen.

Breakthrough Thinking
Connect the 9 circles using only 4 connected straight lines
without lifting your pen.

We often impose constraints in a problem situation which are not really present.
In this case it was not necessary for all the lines to be within the box formed by
the circles.
This is the reason breakthrough thinking is called thinking outside the box.

Now try connecting all the circles with only 3 connected straight lines.

In this case, we
simply apply the out
of the box idea and
stretch the lines even
further to solve the
problem.

Now try with

only 2 lines.

Did you
assume
that the
lines had
to be
thin?

Can
you try
with
just
one
line?

Complete
Breakthrough
Thinking!
Moral:
A broad outlook
enables
breakthrough
thinking!

#7. Break it down

The whole is more than the sum of
all its parts says Gestalt. So every
time you are confronted with a whole
big chunk of work, break it down
dissect it into smaller parts.

#8. Avoid multi-tasking

Aside from the old adage saying you cant
serve two masters at the same time,
multi-tasking is less productive according
to Readers Digest (March 2011).
As we try to do more and more in less
and less time, its often the case where
errors will creep in. We call that a speedaccuracy trade-off, says Dr. Pierre
Jolicoeur, chair in experimental cognitive
science at the University of Montreal.

#9. Invest on true

friendship

Friends with benefits call it that way if you

want to. But in the life of a student leader or
even just that of a regular student, investing
on true friendship is really important.
You have to create a support network for
yourself that in case you need help, there
will be people who will surely come to your
aid. And to make it even, assist them too
when they need help. After all, true
friendship is a give-and-take relationship.

#10. Ask for help

It takes humility to accept that we

cant finish some tasks alone but it
is only by asking for help that things
become lighter and easier for us.

#11. Make friends with your parents

You cant make it alone.

You need your parents support.
Make friends with them.
Please them.
Make them proud of you.

#12. Think out of the box

INTELLIGENCE

It Pays to Learn to

and to be Logical

#13. There is always a

better way

THERE IS

A
WAY

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet.
He held up a sign which said:

There were only a few

coins in
the hat because only a few people
were giving money to the blind boy.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from

his pocket and dropped them into the hat.

Then, the man took the sign, turned it

around, and wrote some words on it.

He put the sign back so that everyone

who walked by will see the new words
that he wrote.

Soon the hat began to fill up!

A lot more people were
giving money to the blind
boy as a result of what the
man wrote.

That same afternoon the man who had

changed the sign came to see how things
were, and he was pleased with what he saw.

The boy recognized his footsteps and asked,

You were the one who changed my sign this
morning, right? What did you write?

The man said,

I only wrote the truth.
I said what you said but
in a

DIF

way.

T
N
E
FER

What he had written was:

Beautiful

"Today is a
day
and I cannot see it."

Do you think the first sign and

the second sign were saying
the same thing?

Of course! Both signs told people

the boy was blind.

But the first sign I am blind, please help simply told people to help by putting some money in the hat.

On the other hand, the second sign

told people that they were able to
enjoy the beauty of the day; but the
boy could not enjoy it, because he
was blind.

There are at least

two lessons we can learn
from this simple story.

The first is,

Be thankful for what you have. Someone else has less.
Help where you can.

The second is,

Be
Be
Think
THERE IS ALWAYS A

.
.
.
WAY!

#14. Get enough sleep

You may be able to finish your task because
you stayed up the whole night but that will
surely ruin your class the next day. Teachers
are absolutely turned off seeing their students
sleeping in class. And you know, we simply
have to please our teachers.
Sleep-deprived students are less efficient ones
and this is proven to be true. Sleeping is the
best rest for your mind; and it will also cement
the memory you have acquired from the day
making you a more brilliant one!

#15. Smile, no matter what

Yes, you have to smile no matter
what happens. Its a fact that
anything that may go wrong will go
wrong I remember my teacher
saying this before.
Its already given that along the way
youll be committing mistakes and
will experience a lot of failures. But it
doesnt matter.
Smiling can fight negative energies.

Did you notice that these are all perfect squares?

25 (5^2)+16(4^2)+9(3^2)+4(2^2)+1(1^2) = 55

Lesson from the

Activity:
People May See the
Same Things; Yet,
May Also See Them
Differently.

Let me share a story

before I end.

A man was walking

along the beach
one sunset.
As he walked, he
saw a young boy in
the distance.
As he drew nearer,
he noticed the boy
kept on bending
down, picking
something up and
throwing it into the
water.

As the man
approached even
closer, he saw
that the boy was
picking up starfish
that had been
washed up on the
beach and, one at
a time, he was
throwing them
back into the
water.

The man asked

the boy what he
was doing.
"I am throwing
these starfish
back into the
ocean or else they
will die," the boy
replied.

The man
reacted, Weh?
Di nga? Nakadrugs ka ba?
You can't
possibly save
them all!
There are
thousands on
this beach, and
this must be
happening on
hundreds of

The man
continued,
You can't possibly
make a
difference!
The boy smiled,
bent down and
picked up another
starfish.
And as he threw it
back into the sea,
the boy replied,

You need to

and academic
