INTRODUCTION

A Femtocell is a small mobile

telecommunic-ation network base station
that

Operates in licensed spectrum and is

controlled by the operator

Can be connected with existing handsets

Uses residential DSL or cable broadband

connections

Can be installed by the customer without

any special skills

LITERATURE SURVEY

Fan, Z. and Sun, Y., Access and handover

management for femtocell systems, International
Journal on Electronics and Communication Technology,
2010

In this paper analysis on interference impact on femtocells

have been provided.

When a non-CSG MS comes close to the femtocell in

question, the macrocell BS makes the decision (based on the
CSG access list exchanged from the femtocell) that
unnecessary handover will not be initiated, saving radio
resource and signaling load on the network.

At the same time various interference mitigation

mechanisms can be operated.

A hybrid access mode and a femtocell-initiated handover

procedure with adaptive threshold have also been discussed.

FEMTOCELL REFERENCE
INTERFACES(CONTD.)

FAP: It is a hardware
customers premise that

device

located

at

the

interfaces with mobile devices over the air radio

interface .

interfaces with core network via broadband interface.

FGW: It interfaces with the FAP over the broadband

access network (Fa).

Performs necessary protocol networking

Provides an aggregation functionality for a group of FAPs.

Also performs function of security gateway.

Interfaces with different MNO network segments using

interfaces like Fb-cs, Fb-ps and Fb-ims

INTERFACES(CONTD.)

Subscriber Databases: used to

store
customer
provisioning
information needed to offer service.

FMS: It supports 2 interfaces:

Fm: used to manage the FAP device.

Fg: used to manage the FGW.

FAS: It interfaces to IMS via Fas

interface

FEMTOCELL INTERFERENCE
SCENARIOS

11

4 main interference scenarios are:

Femtocells interfering with the base stations

on same frequency

Base station interfering with the femtocells

on the same frequency

Closely spaced femtocells interfering with

each other

User equipment transmitting with a

sufficiently high power such that it is received
by more than one base station

HANDOFF DISCUSSION

13

There are 3 main scenarios for

femtocell handover:

Inbound (from the macrocell to the

femtocell

Outbound (from the femtocell to the

macrocell)

From one femtocell to another

femtocell
