INTRODUCTION

Participatory mapping (P- Mapping) and Participatory GIS are

the creation of maps by local communities. One of the main
aims of P- mapping and P- GIS is for local communities to share
their spatial knowledge with the outside world mostly for
development and planning related purposes.

OBJECTIVE
S

To map

the Local Spatial Knowledge (LSK) of social

study environment among ITC students in Enschede.

To identify patterns of utility and perceptions.

To practice data collection via different mapping
tools.

To compare

the mapping output of the different

Analysis and conclusion

Tool considered to be the best to capture local spatial

knowledge is sketch map.
All the tools are appropriate, but we found problems with
the Collector in collecting points and the Locus in
recording the routes during the field data acquisition.
Improving the Collector can be done by creating criteria of
selecting participants, using the mobile internet connection
(not Wi Fi), it should be accompanied by mobile GNSS
device and recorder device.

Analysis and conclusion

Positive Experiences:
- The interaction between the facilitator and the participant
became learning process for both party
- The cooperative and freely sharing of the participants
- The dynamic and ability of the participants to draw
- Good understanding of the participants about the
command/request given
Negative experiences:
- Insufficient time
- The functionality of the collector tool was affected
negatively by the lack of internet connection
