The Project Ara comes under

the Advanced Technology
and Projects(ATAP)
organization, which was a
division of Motorola. When
Motorola was sold to Lenovo in
January 2014, Google Kept
ATAP and Project Ara, which is
now called Google Ara.

How it works?

Project ARA has two core

component :

The ENDOSKELETON and

The MODULE.

MDK
(Module Developers Kit)

The Module Developers Kit (MDK) defines the Ara

platform for module developers and provides
reference implementations for various design features.

The Ara platform consists of an on-device packetswitched data network based on the MIPI UniPro
protocol stack, a flexible power bus, and an elegant
industrial design that mechanically unites the modules
with an endoskeleton

PROJECT ARA'S PROTOTYPE APPLICATION PROCESSOR

MODULE, WHICH HOUSES THE CPU, MEMORY, SD CARD SLOT,
AND OTHER THINGS.

Three different type of configurationsMini, Medium and Large.

Three technologies that will make

Project ARA work :

UniPro

Capacitive M-PHY

ElectroPermanent Magnets

UniPro

UniPro is a high speed internet protocol that project

ARA uses to allow its modules to speak to each other.

They share a common low level language for

communicating and building a network.

Project ARA is tapping into the latest UniPro 1.6 SPEC

Which offer high-bandwidth, and low power

connections between the modules.

Capacitive M-PHY

A physical layer spec which is developed by MIPI

alliance and made to work with UniPro.

For project ARA, M-PHY is a capacitive interface, which

means that the points wont be worn down over time
from swapping modules in and out of the phone.

M-PHY is requiring less pins and providing more

bandwidth per pin with improved power efficiency.

Electropermanent Magnets

Electropermanent magnets are used for affixing the

modules in place in the ENDO.

Normal Electromagnets magnetize depending on if

current is running through them that would be a
battery drain.

But Electropermanent magnets only use current to flip

magnetization on and off.

It is able to retain its magnetized state without drainig

additional power.

Advantages of ARA phones :

could have two versions of your phone.

Disadvantages of ARA phones :

It

will be bigger and heavier than a

smartphone.

The

connectors are bound to cause problems.

Certain

combinations wont work.

wont be optimized.

Challenges

Limited manufactures.

Getting such a phone accepted by operators.

Software integration.

Changing components that potentially have impact on

performance could disrupt the service experience.

Googles project Ara smartphones

are expected to be launched in
2016.
