HUMAN

POPULATIO
N

INTRODUCTION
Theworld populationis the total
number of livinghumansonEarth. In
June, 2013United NationsDepartment
of Economic and Social Affairs,
Population Division estimated that as
of 2010, the world population was
6.916billion.
As of today's date, the world
population isestimated by theUnited
States Census Bureauto be 7.193
billion and is increasing at a very
alarming rate.

If we talk about in the scientific way

human population is defined as:
the number of organisms of a given
species in a certain area.
All people of group: all of the people
of a particular nationality , ethnic
group, religion, or class who live in
an area are known to be population.

Human Population : Ever

Increasing

POPULATION EXPLOSION
The world has experiencedcontinuous
growth since the end of theGreat
Famineand theBlack Deathin 1350,
when it was near 370million.
The highest growth rates global
population increases above 1.8% per
year occurred briefly during the
1950s, and for longer during the
1960s and 1970s.
The global growth rate peaked at
2.2% in 1963, and has declined to
below 1.1% as of 2012.

Global humanpopulation growthis

around 75 million annually, or 1.1% per
year. The global population has grown
from 1 billion in 1800 to 7 billion in
2012. It is expected to keep growing to
reach 10 billion by the end of the
century.
Human population growth is increasing
at a very high speed. And it was
estimated by the end of 2050 the
population will rise up to such extend
that it will break all the previous record.
This has lead to human population
explosion.

POPUALTION EXPLOSION
Commonly known as Human
overpopulation.
Human overpopulationoccurs if the
number of people in a group exceeds
thecarrying capacity of a region
occupied by that group.
Thecarrying capacity is known as
biologicalspeciesin anenvironmentis
the maximum population size of the
species that the environment can
sustain indefinitely given
food,habitat,waterand other necessities
available in the environment..

POPULATION

MAJOR REASONS FOR

POPUALATION
EXPLOSION
The root causes and reason for
overpopulation are multifaceted &
complex.
From a historical perspective,
technological revolutions have coincided
with population explosions. There have
been three major technological
revolutions the tool-making revolution,
theagricultural revolution, and
theindustrial revolution all of which
allowed humans more access to food,
resulting in subsequent population
explosions

Food production further increased

with the industrial revolution as
machinery, fertilizers, herbicides, and
pesticides were used to increase land
under cultivation as well as crop
yields.
In short, similar to bacteriathat
multiply in response to increased food
supply, humans have increased their
population as soon as food became
more abundant as a result of
technological innovations.
These were the main reason for the
ever increase in human population.

CONSEQUENCES OF
OVERPOPULATION

The major consequences of human

population explosion are many:
a)Over Exploitation of Natural Resources:
Due to high growth in population, the
requirements of the people increased at
a tremendous rate and consequently,
the natural resources were unexpectedly
over exploited . Out of them, some are
renewable and some are non-renewable
resources. The non-renewable resources
are being extinct because of over
utilization.

B)Industrialization and Urbanization:

With the advent of industrial
revolution in Europe and its further
expansion in the other continents, the
process of urbanization began. The high
growth rate in population in the villages
and urban centers further accentuated
its magnitude and the cities mostly in
the developing and underdeveloped
countries are being converted into
slums. The urban areas are facing acute
shortage of land and water and severe
environmental problems.

C)Shrinking Agricultural Land:

There is unbreakable cycle of
transformation of forest land into
agricultural land and in the same way the
agricultural lands are being converted into
construction of settlements and
establishment of industries in or around
the cities. The rate of transformation is
tremendous. The tropical rain forests of
Amazon Basin, within the territory of Brazil
were cut down at a large scale during
eighties for construction of agricultural
farm lands, which led a way for severe
ecological disturbances.

D)Global Warming: The global

warming, which is caused by emission
of toxic gases and enhancement of
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere,
is now being a global phenomenon.
In the route of this phenomenon, the
developmental activities, launched by
man for his welfare, are responsible.
Due to global warming, the global
average surface temperature has
increased over the 20th century by
about 0.6 C.

E) Environmental Pollution and

Enhancement in Greenhouse Gases: The
upper layer of soil is burnt due to
excessive use of chemicals fertilizers. It
was done for high yield of crops.
Population explosion has led a way for
worldwide pollution, which is the major
cause of contamination of Earth's
environment with materials that
interfere with human health, the quality
of life, or the natural functioning of
ecosystems (living organisms and their
physical surroundings).

F)Poverty, Malnutrition and Famine:

Poverty and malnutrition is a growing
and common phenomenon in the
underdeveloped countries. High
growth rate of population and
comparatively how production of
crops has enhanced the situation of
poverty, malnutrition and famine in
these countries.

SOLUTION/CONTROL
Human population controlis the
practice of artificially altering the rate
ofgrowth of a human population.
Historically human population control has
been implemented with the goal of
increasing the rate of population growth.
In the period from the 1950s to the 1980s,
concerns about global population growth
and its effects on poverty, environmental
degradation and political stability led to
efforts to reduce population growth rates.

While population control can involve

measures that improve people's lives
by giving them greater control of
their reproduction, a few programs,
most notably the Chinese
government's one-child per family
policy, have resorted to coercive
measures.

OUTCOME....
There are many reasons and
consequences which are the result of
human population explosion.
The result which comes out is very
severe if the population will keep on
rising at the same rate.
Hence we all need to imply a effective
measures in order to control the
population so that the stress which it
is implementing on the environment
and natural resources should be
lowered or decreases.

Human population control has to be

implemented by limiting the
population'sbirth rate, usually by
government mandate, and has been
undertaken as a response to factors
including high or increasing levels
ofpoverty,environmental
concerns,religious reasons,
andoverpopulation. While population
control can involve measures that
improve people's lives by giving them
greater control of their reproduction,
some programs have exposed them to
exploitation.
